AtfirstIfoundtheirremarksandreactionstothesightsofdailyBeijinglifepuzzling.Theywerefascinatedbyeverylittledetail.DetailsthatIbarelynoticed.Whydidtheywanttotakeaphotographofamansellingyoutiao?Whatwassointerestingaboutalineofwaitersstandingoutsidearestaurant?Whywasagroupofelderlypeopleexercisingintheeveningsoenthralling?

Istartedtorecallthatscenesliketheseoncefascinatedmetoo.InIrelandyoujustdontseethem.ItwasthenthatmemoriesofmyfirstmonthinChinacamefloodingbacktome.WhenIfirstcametothiscountryIworkedasanEnglishteacherinWuhan.ThinkingbackitwasthestudentsImetinthatfirstyearandChineseuniversitylifeingeneralthatgavemethedeepestimpression.

Inthewest,studentlifeisacombinationofstudyandsocializingwithaheavyemphasisplacedonthesocializingpart!DuringmyfirstweekasanEnglishteacherinChinaIwasinvitedtoastudentparty.HavingonlyrecentlygraduatedfromuniversitymyselfIstillverymuchenjoyedstudentpartiesandgladlyacceptedtheinvitation.

OntheeveningofthepartyIwasaccompaniedtoabuildingoncampusbytwostudents.Iwasledtoaroomandenteredexpectingtoseepeopledancing,drinking,eatingandchatting.Instead,Ifoundmyselffacinganauditoriumofabouttwohundredstudentsapplaudingme.Iwashandedamicrophoneandaskedtospeak.Aboutwhat?Iaskedwithafright.Anythingcamethereply!AfterIgotovermyinitialstagefrightIfoundthatitreallydidntmatterwhatItalkedabout.MyaudiencewerehappytohavetheopportunitytolistentoanativeEnglishspeaker.TheysimplywantedtopracticetheirEnglish.

InthecourseofthefollowingyearIencounteredmanysuchsituations.IwasgenuinelyimpressedbythededicationandmotivationofChinesestudents.WhenIwasastudentIwouldrarelygiveupmysparetimetoanyactivityconnectedwithstudy.Unlessexamswereapproachingmyweekendsweredevotedtohavingfunorperhapsapart-timejob.MyChinesestudents,ontheotherhand,seemedtospendtheirentirewakinghoursstudying.IunderstandthatcompetitioninChineseuniversitiesisextremelyintense.Nonetheless,theirenergyanddriveputmetoshame.

AsaforeignteacherIwasmainlyresponsibleforhelpingthestudentstoimprovetheirspokenEnglishskills.Tomostpeoplethatsoundsreallyeasy.Allyouhavetodoisturnupforclassandchatwithyourstudents.Thatsallverywellbutwh
