Thisnewstudyreanalyzedmeasurescollectedinanearlierstudy,inwhichagroupofchronicpainsufferershad
beenrandomlyarrangedanintervention(干預(yù))showntoreducepain(sleepingwithaheavily-weightedblanket)or
toacontrolcondition(sleepingwithaslightly-weightedblanket).Aftersleepingwiththeirblanketsforaweek,
changesinpeople'spainlevelswereassessed.
Intheearlierstudy,thepainsufferershadalsoreportedontheiranxiety,levelsofloneliness,andsenseofsocial
connectedness-nothowmanysocialconnectionstheyhad,buthowgenerallyclosetheyweretootherpeopleand
howstronglytheyexperiencedasenseofbelonging.Butthesehadn'tallbeenanalyzedtoseehowtheyrelatedtopain
andpainrelieffromtheblankets.That'swherethenewstudycamein.
Thenewfindingsshowedthatpeoplewhoweremoresociallyconnectedexperiencedlesspainthanthosewho
werelesssociallyconnected.Aftertakingintoaccountdifferencesinhowmuchpainreliefthesufferersexpectedand
howpainfultheyfeltinthebeginning,thosewhoweresociallydisconnectedfeltmorepainrelieffromtheweighted
blanketthanfromthelighterblanket,whilemoresociallyconnectedpeoplereceivedequalpainrelieffromboth
blankets.
Thesefindingsshowthathavingasenseofbelongingprovidessomelevelofprotectionagainstpain.Why?
Sociallyconnectedpeopleprobablyfeelsaferandlessanxious,saysBaumgartner,becausetheyknowtheycan
dependonothersforsupportwhenthey'rehurting.Besides,positivesocialtouch-likereceivingafriendlyhugor
