"EverybodythinksthattheAntarcticisshrinkingduetoclimatechange,but
therealityismuchmorecomplex,"saysDavidVaughan,aprincipal
investigatorattheBritishAntarcticSurveyinCambridge,U.K,"Partsofit
appeartobethickeningasaresultofsnowfallincreases,butthePeninsulais
thinningatanalarmingrateduetowarming.TheWestAntarcticsheetisalso
thinning,andwe'renotsureofthereasonwhy."

Antarctica.Makingtemperaturemeasurementsforthecontinentasawholeis
difficult;itisavastplace—morethan2,000kmacross---therearefewresearch
stations,andtemperaturesvarynaturallyby2-3℃fromyeartoyear.But
measurementsindicatethatinthewest,meltingisunderway.
"Aboutone-thirdoftheWestAntarcticicesheetisthinning,"saysDr.
Vaughan,"unaveragebyabout10cmperyear,butintheworstplacesby3-
4mperyear."
TherockonwhichtheWestAntarcticicerestsisbelowsealevel,andBritish
AntarcticSurveyresearchersbelievethethinningcouldbeduetotheicesheet
meltingonitsunderside.
"Itmaybethattheoceaniswarmingendthat'scausingtheicetomelt,but
theremaybeotherreasonsaswell;forexample,there'slotsofvolcanismin
thatareaandsothatcouldchangehowmuchheatisdeliveredtotheunderside
oftheicesheet."
CryosatshouldhelptopindownwhatishappeningattheWestAntarctic
