ThurgoodMarshallwasbominBaltimoreonJuly2nd,1908.Inthatcity,andin
manyotherpartsoftheUSA.atthattime,blackpeoplewereseparatedfromwhite
peoplebylaw.Whenhewasinprimaryschool,oneofhisteacherspunishedhimby
sendinghimtoreadandrememberthewordsoftheConstitution(憲法).It'salong

tooklegalaction.Hewonthecase.
Hewentontowinmanymorecasesdealingwithracialseparationlaws.His
mostimportantcasewastheoneofBrownversusBoardofEducation"in1954.The
caseinvolvedthecityofTopeka,whereitwaslegaltohave“separatebutequal”
schoolsfbrblackstudentsandwhitestudents.Marshallargueditwasaviolation(違
背)oftheConstitutiontoseparatepeoplebecauseoftheirrace.Headdedthatthe
word“equal“meantgettingthesamething,atthesametimeandinthesameplace.
TheSupremeCourtagreed.Thecasehelpeddestroytheterriblewalloflegalracial
separationthroughouttheUnitedStates.
In1961,PresidentJohnKennedynamedThurgoodMarshalltobeajudgeofa
federalappealscourt.In1967,PresidentLyndonJohnsonappointedhimtothe
SupremeCourt.Heservedfbr24yearsbeforeheretired.

Stretching269.13meters,theOlympicclassshipswerewondersofnaval

wreckedbeforetheTitanicdid,butitwastheonlyonetosurviveandmaintaina
