Boyan

Slat

is

an

inventor

from

the

Netherlands.

He

likes

to

create

big

projects

to

solve

big

problems,

like

plastic

pollution

in

our

oceans.

When

he

was

a

teenager,

he

started

a

project

called

The

Ocean

Cleanup

to

help

with

this

problem.

While

on

vacation

in

Greece

at

the

age

of

16,

he

went

scuba

diving(浮潛)

and

saw

more

plastic

bags

than

fish

in

the

sea.

This

made

him

wonder

“Why

can't

we

just

clean

this

up?”

So,

he

started

researching

the

problem

and

possible

technological

solutions

to

clean

up

ocean's

plastic

pollution.

Then

he

looked

for

ways

to

deal

with

this

problem

and

shared

his

ideas

in

a

TEDx

speech.

Soon,

the

TEDx

video

about

cleaning

up

ocean

plastic

pollution

suddenly

spread

widely.

People

really

liked

his

ideas,

and

he

got

a

lot

of

support.

This

allowed

him

to

drop

out

of

his

studies

in

Aerospace

Engineering

set

up

The

Ocean

Cleanup.

With

just

300

of

his

money,

end,

Boyan

team

were

able

to

prove(證明)

that

their

technology

could

clean

up

plastic

from

both

rivers

and

the

Great

Pacific

Garbage

Patch

(太平洋垃圾帶).

Now,

The

Ocean

Cleanup

is

working

to

clean

up

this

huge

area

of

plastic

in

the

ocean.

They

have

also

placed

special

tools

in

dirty

rivers

to

prevent

more

plastic

from

getting

there.

Boyan

and

his

team

are

trying

to

make

our

oceans

and

rivers

cleaner

and

healthier

for

all

of

us.

You

can

visit

their

website

to

see

how

much

progress

they

have

made

and

find

out

more

about

their

work.(
