Oneofhislatestprojectshasbeentomakeplantsglow(發(fā)光)inexperiments

usingsomecommonvegetables.Stranosteamfoundthattheycouldcreatea

faintlightforthree-and-a-halfhours.Thelight,aboutone-thousandthofthe

amountneededtoreadby,isjustastart.Thetechnology,Stranosaid,couldone

daybeusedtolighttheroomsoreventoturntreesintoself-poweredstreetlamps.

Inthefuture,theteamhopestodevelopaversionofthetechnologythatcan

besprayedontoplantleavesinaone-offtreatmentthatwouldlasttheplant's

lifetime.Theengineersarealsotryingtodevelopanonandoff"switch"where

theglowwouldfadewhenexposedtodaylight.

Lightingaccountsforabout7%ofthetotalelectricityconsumedintheUS.

Sincelightingisoftenfarremovedfromthepowersource(電源)-suchasthe

distancefromapowerplanttostreetlampsonaremotehighway-alotofenergy
