signsofsimultaneousphotosynthesisanddirectorganiccarbonconsumptionfromCylindrothecaclosterium.The

teamalsoshowedthatthisdiatomspeciescangrowmuchfasterwhenconsumingorganiccarboninadditionto

photosynthesis.Furthermore,thenewresearchhintedatthepossibilitythatspecificspeciesofbacteriaarefeeding

organiccarbondirectlytoalargepercentageofthesediatomslivingallacrosstheglobalocean.Thisworkisbasedon

agenome-scalemetabolicmodelingapproachthattheteamusedtorevealthemetabolismofthediatomCylindrotheca

closterium.

Theteam*snewmetabolicmodelingdatasupportrecentlabexperimentssuggestingthatsomediatomsmayrely
