resultofreadingabook,hedecidedtogototheupperpartoftheAmazonRiver.He

plannedtomakeafortunebycollectingandsellingcocoa.Hisonlyproblemwasmoney

forthetrip.Thatproblemwassolvedinanun-usualway.Hefoundafiftydollarbillon

thesidewalkandleftfbrBrazilthenextday.HegotasfarastheMississippiRiverand

thenranoutofmoney.NextMarkTwaindecidedtobecomeariver-boatpilotonthe

Mississippi.Hefollowedhisnewprofessionforfifteenmonths.Hememorizedallthe

turns,shallowspots,anddangerousrocksinthe1200milesfromSt.LouistoNew

Orleans.Helearnedabouttheprideandresponsibilitiesofthepilots.Hebecamean

excellentpilot.However,hislifeasapilotcametoasuddenend.Theriverwasclosedto

navigationattheoutbreakoftheCivilWar.ThenhejoinedtheConfederateArmy,but

shortlyafterthat,hiscompanywasdisbanded.Hedidnotjointhearmyagain.He

followedhisbrotherOriontoNevadain1861andconsequentlytookuphisnext

profession.Hebecameaminerinthisfrontierregion.Duringthisperiod,hestartedto

writeshortarticles.ThepublisheroftheEnterpriseinVirginiaCity,Nevada,recognized

1870,MarkTwainwasmarriedtoOliviaLangdoninElmira,NewYork.Itwasan

extremelysuccessfulmarriage.Theyweredevotedtoeachotherthroughouttheirlives.

HiswifeOliviahadastrongandlastinginfluenceonhiswriting.Shewasalwayscareful

toremoveallofthebadwords.Healwaysaccept-edherchangeswithoutargument.In
