presenceofafourthplanetinthesystem,Kepler-138e.
Thisnewlyfoundplanetissmallandfartherfromitsstarthanthethreeothers,taking38daystocompletean
orbit.Theplanetisinthe14zoneofitsstar,atemperateregionwhereaplanetreceivesjusttheright
amountofheatfromitscoolstartobeneithertoohotnortoocoldtoallowthepresenceofliquidwater.Observingthe
exoplanefstransitwouldhaveallowedastronomersto15itssize.
WithKepler-138e,themassesofthe16knownplanetsweremeasuredagainviathetransit
timing-variationmethod,whichconsistsof17smallvariationsintheprecisemomentsoftheplanets9
transitsinfrontoftheirstarcausedbythegravitationalpullofothernearbyplanets.
Theresearchershadanothersurprise:theyfoundthatthetwowaterworldsKepler-138canddaretwinplanets,
