A young boy named Patrick lived in the British Isles, a land that had been invaded and conquered first by the Romans and then by Ger

2、manic tribes. Patrick was captured and taken as a slave from the British Isles to what is now Ireland.,One day Patrick felt that he was called by God to perform an important mission. He believed it was his duty to convert the Celtic people to the Christian religion. So he became a missionary, travel

3、ing from village to village and talking about his faith. St. Patrick died on March 17 and the Irish people set aside the day to mourn.,Holiday: St. Patricks Day-2,Customs: Every year on March 17 or the preceding Saturday, cities with a large population of Irish Americans have parades. Green is one o

4、f the national colors of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring. Green stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green shirts, ties, hair ribbons and hats. Many American bars even serve green beer on that day.,Holiday: April Fools Day,Origin: In sixteenth-cent

5、ury France, the start of the new year was observed on April first. Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world, and the new year fell on January first. There were some people, however, who hadnt heard or didnt believe the change in the date, so they continued to cele

6、brate New Years Day on April first. Others played tricks on them and called them April fools. They sent them on a fools errand or tried to make them believe that something false was true.,Customs: Play small tricks on friends and strangers.,Holiday: Mothers Day,Origin: England was one of the first c

7、ountries to set aside a day to recognize mothers. In the eighteenth century when many people worked as household servants for the rich, Mothering Sunday was reserved for them to return home to be with their mothers. One Sunday for Mothers was established as a holiday in the twentieth century. In the

8、 United States, Mothers Day did not become an official holiday until 1915.,Customs: A day to be especially kind and thoughtful to your mother serving breakfast in bed, cooking for her, sending gifts or cards, etc.,Holiday: Memorial Day,Origin: In1866, the town of Waterloo, New York, started a ceremo

9、ny to honor the soldiers who were killed in the Civil War and were buried in the Waterloo cemetery. At about the same time, another ceremony was held for the soldiers who survived the war. It was called Decoration Day. Later the two ceremonies were joined with the name Memorial Day and soldiers who

10、had died in previous wars were honored as well.,Customs: Visit graves of family members and those who died in war; exhibitions at military bases.,Holiday: Fathers Day,Origin: The origin of Fathers Day is not clear, though the strongest promoter of the holiday was Mrs. Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Mr

11、s. Dodd felt that she had an outstanding father. A veteran of the Civil War, he had raised six children with his wife having died young. In 1909, Mrs. Dodd suggested a church service dedicated to fathers on her fathers birthday. From then on, the state of Washington celebrated the third Sunday in Ju

12、ne as Fathers Day. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event.,Customs: A day to be kind to your father, to do special things for him.,Origin: Independence Day is celebrated on July 4 because that is the day when the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of

13、Independence. But the War of Independence dragged on until 1783, and in that year, Independence Day was made an official holiday. 1941 Congress declared 4th of July a federal holiday.,Holiday: Independence Day,Customs: Family get-togethers; picnics; barbecues; parades; fireworks; special patriotic p

14、rograms.,Holiday: Labor Day,Origin: Many immigrants settled in America in the nineteenth century. They found that living conditions were bad, and working conditions were even worse. In the spring of 1872, 100,000 workers in New York went on strike demanding a decrease in the long working day. Worker

15、s began to demand and get their rights to an eight-hour workday, a secure job and a future in their trades. A holiday was planned for workers on the first Monday in September. In 1894, Congress voted it a federal holiday.,Customs: Family get-togethers; picnics; outings.,Holiday: Columbus Day,Customs

16、: Children sometimes dont have school.,Origin: Americans might not have a Columbus Day if Christopher Columbus had not been born in Italy. Out of pride for their native son, the Italian population of New York City organized the first celebration of the discovery of America on October 12, 1866. In 18

17、69, when Italians of San Francisco celebrated October 12, they called it Columbus Day. In 1937, then President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12 as Columbus Day. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October.,Holiday: Halloween-1,Origin: Since the 800s November 1st

18、is a religious holiday known as All Saints Day. The evening before became known as Halloween. Its origins lie in both pre-Christian and Christian customs. October 31st was the eve of the Celtic new year. The Celts (凱爾特人) were the ancestors of the present-day Irish, Welsh and Scottish people. On this

19、 day ghosts walked and mingled with the living, or so the Celts thought.,Holiday: Halloween-2,Origin: The townspeople baked food all that day and when night fell they dressed up and tried to resemble the souls of the dead hoping that the ghosts would leave peacefully. Before midnight of the new year

20、 the people carried the food to the edge of town and left it for them. Much later, when Christianity spread throughout Ireland and October 31 was no longer the last day of the year, Halloween became a celebration mostly for children.,Customs: Children go trick-or-treating in costumes; costume partie

21、s; decorate windows with symbols of Halloween: pumpkins, bats, ghosts, witches, pumpkin lanterns.,Holiday: Veterans Day,Origin: In 1918, at 11:00 on Nov 11th, the Allied powers signed a cease-fire agreement with Germany,bringing World War I to an end. November 11, 1919 was set aside as Armistice Day

22、 in the United States. In 1938 it was made a federal holiday. They had arrived too late to grow many crops, and without fresh food, half the colonists died from disease. The foll

24、owing spring the Indians taught them how to grow corn (maize), a new food for the colonists.
