Stern ArchitectsAugust 9, 2012Page 7 of 7Heart of Lake is the realization of a dream: a garden resort town on a lakeside peninsula, a verdant pedestrian community ringed with waterfront parks and crisscrossed with landscaped walks. We are extremely pleased to have been involved in its design and congratulate Vanke on the completion of its first phase. When we were first invited to propose a design for Heart of Lake, we put forward an alternative to the repetitive arrangement of anonymous residential blocks that has typified many high-density urban developments in China in the second half of the twentieth century. This approach was something of a gamble; other planners and architects proposed concepts that straightforwardly accommodated high density and satisfied Chinas stringent requirements for south light with repetitive formulas. From the start Vanke had higher ambitions for this spectacular site and saw the value in our ideas, and with their commitment and expertise, we embarked on our happy collaboration. We brought to Heart of Lake our knowledge of Western planning traditions, in particular the principles of the City Beautiful movement as exemplified by Forest Hills Gardens in New York City and Hampstead Garden Suburb north of London. Our colleagues at Vanke helped us to understand the enduring romantic appeal of nearby Gulong Island, where history has grafted traditional Western architecture onto the charming small-scale street pattern of a traditional Chinese hill town. The challenge at Heart of Lake was to translate these ideas into a large-scale, high-density 21st-century residential neighborhood in a way that respects the realities of budget and scheduleand that works creatively to meet those same south-light requirements. Heart of Lake draws on both Chinese and Western traditions. It reconnects contemporary life with the history that was too often neglected in the second half of the twentieth century, reminding us of a time when architecture in China had a powerful and positive impact on peoples lives and the culture of a community. It recalls the strong and productive cultural exchange between China and the West that is evidenced by places like Gulong Island. It shows how a well-conceived new town can attain the timelessness, appealing complexity, and deep connection to local culture that elsewhere has taken generations to achieve. Heart of Lake has an architectural vocabulary all its own, a vocabulary that responds to Xiamens semitropical local climate and reinterprets the simple volumetric forms, the time-tested detailing, and the solid materials found in both traditional Chinese and Mediterranean architecture. This new town demonstrates how a strong plan diagram and a hierarchy of residential types can successfully produce a richly varied community. Heart of Lake benefits from a wider mix of residential building types than is typical for contemporary commercial development, including residential towers, mid-rise and low-rise residential blocks, townhouses, and free-standing villas. These residences are organized around a lushly landscaped central park, intimate courtyards, stone-paved plazas, and pedestrian ways that connect to the public waterfront park that wraps the peninsula. Vankes decision to make Heart of Lake a fully walkable pedestrian community brings together our memories of the past and our hopes for the future. The major paths are laid out on a loose radial grid that maximizes exposure to sunlight, views to the lake, and prevailing northerly breezes. The central park, and a canal park running parallel to it, are anchored by point towers; other point towers are carefully sited to the north and east to give the dense community a comfortable scale. Carefully calibrated streetscapes offer ever-changing vistas along curved paths. In its design, Heart of Lake benefits from both local and global lessons about how people want to live. We at Robert A.M. Stern Architects have long been students of architecture and planning in New York, which has an unequalled collection of luxury highrise buildings (including our own highly successful 15 Central Park West); for Heart of Lake, we have taken what we have learned and adapted it to Chinese lifestyles. In the towns we have planned in the United States, we favor covered porches as a transition from outdoors to indoors; but because porches block the light that is required in China, at Heart of Lake they are detached from the villas and placed in private gardens, where they will serve as tea houses. We must acknowledge the essential contributions of our landscape architect colleagues at Olin, based in Philadelphia, which complement our classical approach with a more modernist sensibility, and helped us fine-tune our plan to regional climate and local weather conditions. The first building to open at Heart of Lake is the clubhouse, illustrated in this inaugural publication, which will welcome guests and prospective residents now and in the future, and also serve as a center for the social life of the community. The motor court, with its fountain and civic-scale stair, will lend a sense of occasion to every arrival, as does the clubhouses formal symmetrical entry facade. Inside, dining rooms, lounges, and recreational facilities, connected by a complex system of organizational axes, will bring the community together, while quieter spacesthe library, the contemplative reflection pool in the peristyled courtyardwill provide a sense of calm. Importantly, the clubhouse, as it winds uphill to meet the grand stair, is not a stand-alone building but is knitted into the community, incorporating a number of very special residences on its roof. We are proud of our work at Heart of Lake, and grateful to Vanke for entrusting us with its design. We thank Vanke for its commitment to progress and excellence in every aspect of the project. We are confident that Heart of Lake will be a wonderful place to live, and that it will serve as a model for future new towns both in China and around the world.
