33、vironmentaltermsandshowarelationshipbetweenthetwo.FIfsuchanindicatorexists,itiswellhidden.Andonreflection,thisisnotsurprising;thesingleword“environmenthassomanydimensions,andtherearesomanyotherfactorsaffectingwealthsuchastheoildepositsthatteasingoutasimpleeconomy-environmentrelationshipwouldbealmost
34、impossible.GTheMillenniumEcosystemAssessment,avastfour-yearglobalstudywhichreporteditsinitialconclusionsearlierthisyear,foundreasonstobelievethatmanagingecosystemssustainably-workingwithnatureratherthanagainstitmightbelessprofitableintheshortterm,butcertainlybringslong-termrewards.HAndtheWorldResour
35、cesInstitute(WRI)initsWorldResources2005report,issuedattheendofAugust,producedseveralsuchexamplesfromAfricaandAsia;italsodemonstratedthatenvironmentaldegradationaffectsthepoormorethantherich,aspoorerpeoplederiveamuchhigherproportionoftheirincomedirectlyfromthenaturalresourcesaroundthem.IButtherearea
36、lsomanyexamplesofgrowingwealthbytrashingtheenvironment,inrichandpoorpartsoftheworldalike,whetherthroughunregulatedmineralextraction,drasticwateruseforagriculture,slash-and-burnfarming,orfossil-fuel-guzzling(大量消耗)transport.Ofcourse,suchgrowthmaynotpersistinthelongtermwhichiswhatMr.BrownandtheStockhol

38、populationcollapsed.Therewerenolongerenoughfishintheseaforthestocktomaintainitself,letaloneanindustry.Morethanadecadelater,therewasnosignoftheecosystemre-buildingitself.Ithad,apparently,beenfishedoutofexistence;andtheoncemightyNewfoundlandfleetnowgropesaboutfranticallyforcrabontheseafloor.JThereisav
