Furthermore,childrenwhohadbeeninESLclassestested4higherinEnglishandmathoncetheyexitedLEPprogramsthanthosewhohadreceivednative-languageinstruction.OftheLEPstudentswhoenteredinkindergartenorthefirstgrade,49percentofthosewhohadbeeninESLclasseseventuallyreadatgradelevel,whileonly32percentofthosewhohadbeeninbilingualclassesperformedthatwell.Inmath,thestatisticsareevenmoreimpressive.Ofthechildrenwhoenteredinkindergartenorthefirstgrade,morethan69percentofthosewhohadbeeninESLclasseseventuallyperformedatgradelevelorabove,asopposedto54percentofthosewhohadbeeninbilingualclasses.
