WhigsandDemocratsdifferednotonlyintheirattitudestowardthemarketbutalsoabouthowactivethecentralgovernmentshouldbeinpeople’slives.DespiteAndrewJackson’sinclinationtobeastrongPresident,Democratsasarulebelievedinlimitedgovernment.Governments’roleintheeconomywastopromotecompetitionbydestroyingmonopoliesandspecialprivileges.Inkeepingwiththisphilosophyoflimitedgovernment,Democratsalsorejectedtheideathatmoralbeliefswerethepropersphereofgovernmentaction.Religionandpolitics,theybelieved,shouldbekeptclearlyseparate,andtheygenerallyopposedhumanitarianlegislation.
