InterprocessCommunicationsMei-LingL.Liu1DistributedComputing,M.L.LiuInterprocessCommunicationsOperatingsystemsprovidefacilitiesforinterprocesscommunications(IPC),suchasmessagequeues,semaphores,andsharedmemory.DistributedcomputingsystemsmakeuseofthesefacilitiestoprovideapplicationprogramminginterfacewhichallowsIPCtobeprogrammedatahigherlevelofabstraction.Distributedcomputingrequiresinformationtobeexchangedamongindependentprocesses.2DistributedComputing,M.L.LiuIPC–unicastandmulticastIndistributedcomputing,twoormoreprocessesengageinIPCinaprotocolagreeduponbytheprocesses.Aprocessmaybeasenderatsomepointsduringaprotocol,areceiveratotherpoints.Whencommunicationisfromoneprocesstoasingleotherprocess,theIPCissaidtobea

unicast.Whencommunicationisfromoneprocesstoagroupofprocesses,theIPCissaidtobeamulticast,atopicthatwewillexploreinalaterchapter.

ConnectandreceiveoperationscanresultinindefiniteblockingForexample,ablockingconnectrequestcanresultintherequestingprocesstobesuspendedindefinitelyiftheconnectionisunfulfilledorcannotbefulfilled,perhapsasaresultofabreakdowninthenetwork.Itisgenerallyunacceptableforarequestingprocessto“hang”indefinitely.Indefiniteblockingcanbeavoidedbyusingtimeout.Indefiniteblockingmayalsobecausedbyadeadlock
