InsteadofputtingthebattlebetweenAhabandthewhaleintosimplestatements,heusedsymbols,thatis,objectsorpersonswhorepresentsomethingelse.ThePequodisamicrocosmofhumansocietyandthevoyagebecomesasearchfortruth.Thewhitewhale,MobyDick,symbolizesnature.Itiscomplex,unfathomable,malignant,andbeautifulaswell.ForthecharacterAhab,thewhalerepresentsevil.AhabwillsthewholecrewonthePequodtojoinhiminthepursuitofthebigwhalesoastorootouttheevil,butonlytobedestroyedbyevil,byhisownconsumingdesire,hismadness.Hebecomesevilhimselfinhisthirsttodestroytheevil.Forauthor,aswellasthereaderandIshmael,thenarrator,MobyDickisstillamystery,anultimatemysteryoftheuniverse,inscrutableandambivalent,andthevoyageofthemindwillforeverremainasearchofthetruth.TheproductionofthefirstAmericanproseepicAnepicisgenerallyalongpoemonanimportanttheme.Althoughthebookispresentedintheformofanovel,attimesitseemslikeaprosepoem.
