By1914,hewaseagerforanotheradventure.Nearly5,000peoplevolunteeredtogowithhim.Shackletonchoseacrewof26sailorsandscientists,plusaphotographer,FrankHurley.OnthewaytoAntarctica,hepickedupatleast69sleddogstopulltheexplorersonthelongtrekacrossland.Shackleton'slaststopbeforeheadingforAntarcticawasawhalingstationonSouthGeorgiaIsland.Norwegianwhalerstoldthecrewthatitwas"abadyearforice."Theywereright.UponenteringtheWeddellSea,Shackletonwasforcedtozigzagthroughdangerousicesheets,sometimespassingmorethan400icebergsaday!OnJanuary18,1915,theiceclosedaroundtheship.Itwasstuck,asonesailorputit,"likeanalmondinthemiddleofachocolatebar."Althoughhewaslessthan100milesfromAntarctica,Shackletonsoonrealizedhecouldnotpossiblycrossthecontinentthatwinter.Thecrewwouldjusthavetowait.FightingBoredomandColdAstheshipslowlydriftedwiththeice,thesailorsplayedcards,listenedtorecordsandheldsingingcontests."ThiswasbeforeTV,"saysArmstrong."Peoplewereusedtoentertainingthemselves."Onthesnowoutside,themenbuiltfancy"doghouses"withporchesanddomes.Someevensleptwiththedogsforwarmth.
