YvonneFangmeyer,directorofthestudentorganizationofficeattheUniversityofWisconsin,conductedasurveyinFebruaryofstudentsinvolvedincampusorganizations2.Shesaidthedesireforfriendshipwasthemostfrequentlycitedreasonforjoining.
AtlargeuniversitieslikeFangmeyer's,whichhasmorethan40,000students,thestudentsfirstofallwanttofindawayto"belongintheirowncornerofcampus".
KatieRowley,aWisconsinsenior,confirmsthesurvey'sfindings."IwantedtomakethecampusfeelsmallerbyjoininganorganizationwhereIcouldnotonlygetinvolvedoncampusbutalsofindagroupoffriends."

UniversitylifeisinnowaycheapinCanada.ItcostsPeterKemp,acomputersciencemajorattheBritishColumbiaInstituteofTechnologyinVancouver,C$18,000ayear.
