ArgumentativeEssaysvs.ExpositoryAn“argument”isn’tjusttwopeopleyellingateachother--it’shavingdifferentopinionsonthings.Iybasicway,argumentativeessaysaredifferentfromexpositoryessaysinthesamewaythatopinionsaredifferentfromfacts.Inanexpositoryessay,you,theauthor,don’thavetoomuchroomtoludeyouropinionsorbeliethepage.You’refocusingmoreonfactualstatementsthanondebatableclaims.Youusuallyfocusyourdiscussiononwhatthingsareorhowtheywork.Inanargumentativeessay,though,itisyouropiniononthingsthatmatters.Itishowwellyoucansupportaclaimonatopicthathastworeasonablesides.dence,expertopinion,ysis,and alinsight.Inargumentativewriting,you’retovoiceyouropinions.You’retosaywhateveryou’dlike,aslongasyoucanbackitupandsupportitwithresearch--writingcollege-levelessaysisyourpracticetime,likerunningdrills.--Learningtoyoffenseislikeknowingyourlogicand--Buildingagooddefenseishowwellyouanticipateandrefuteyourreaders’--Passingtheballwellissortoflikelearninghowtomakterconnectionsbetweenyourparagraphsandsentences.topic.Itusedevidence,examples,and/oranecdotestoexinamemorabletime,ce,orItwasnotapurenarrative(astory),norapureargument,butitwasbasedonafixedfocalpoint,athesis,inthiscaseaspecificreasonforwhyatime/ce/eventisimportanttoyou.Yourreasonsforwhyitisimportanttoyouarenotdebatable.Noonecanarguewithyouaboutwhyyoufeelthewaydoabouteventsinyourlife.Assuch,itwasnotanargumentativeessay.Thatisreallythemaindifferencweenwritingexpositoryessaysandargumentativeessays:debatabletopic.Thinkaboutthefollowingquestionstohelpframemanyarguments:Isitgoodorisitbad?Isitrightorisitwrong?Isitharmfulorisitharmless?Shouldsomethingbedoneornot?WhydoyourfeelthewayyouHowmanyexpertsagreewithWhatreal-worldexamplescanyouWhyshouldyourreadersbeHowdoesitaffectyou,theHowcanyouaddressandrefutetheopposition’sWhatsolutionscanyoumentativeessay?You,asalistener,cangothroughdifferenttypesofhiphopsongsandfindmanythatcontainviolentreferencesandlyrics,sotheclaimthattherearesongswithviolentcontentmakethisafactualstatement,notadebatableclaim.Theauthorisn’tmakinganargumentativepointhere,songs.Sowhat?What’syourpoint?WhyamIreadingthis?”Considerthefollowingrevisionsthatoffertwodifferentlegitimateviewpointsonthesamelence,butitisan ’pressionofactualoccurrences,and,assuch,itisthebestwaytoendthe (harmless--beneficialtosociety)Itisthemainpointintheselasttwoexamplesthattakesthefactualstatementthatthereisvio-lenceinsomehiphoplyrics,anditmakesitdebatable.Oneclaimsthatthe isharmfultoitslisteners,andtheotherclaimsitisn’t. Again,inthiscase,howmuchisusedinadvertisingcanbemeasured.Thereisindeedmoreualimageryusedinmodernadvertising,sothereisnodebatablemainpointbeingoffered,noargumentisbeingposed.ConsiderthefollowingrevisionsthatagainoffertwodifferentlegitimateviewpointsonthesameContemporaryadvertising ucts,andthisovertfocuson itywhichdemeansitandcausesrecklessualbehaviors.(harmful--demeans)Alwaysmakesurethatthethesisstatementyou’recreatingmatchesthewritingassignmentathand.Iftheessayissupposedtobeanargument,yourthesisstatement’smainpointshouldbedebatable.Itshouldnotbeafactualstatement,butitshouldprovideamainpointthathasatleasttworeasonablepointsofview,atleasttwoclaimsthatcanbereasonably 它不是一個純粹的敘述(故事),也不是一個純粹的論證,
