Amonthlater,theGermanyarmyhadadvancedacrossnorthernEurope,andtheBritishArmyhad

retreated

tothecoastoftheEnglishChannel.TheonlyescapewastocrosstheseabacktoEngland.HundredsofsmallboatssetoutfromportsontheEnglishcoasttobringbackthesoldiersfromthebeachesofDunkirkinFrance.ButChurchill

On18June1940,Churchillgaveanotherfinespeechwhenhedrewattentiontothe

courage

ofeveryonedefendingBritain."Inyearstocome,"hesaid,"...menwillsay,'Thiswastheirfinesthour.'"

TheGermanscontinuedtheirattacksonBritainfromtheair.AsmallnumberofpilotsresistedthemuchlargerGermanAirForce.Germanylostmanyairplanes,andwasforcedtochangetheir

Intwoyears,Germanybegantolosesomeimportantbattles.AfteradefeatinNorthAfrica,on10November1942hemadeaspeechwiththefamouswords,"Nowthisisnottheend.Itisnoteventhebeginningoftheend.Butitis,perhaps,theendofthebeginning."
