Iloveyou,China,andI’msoproudofbeingaChinese.I’mproudthatI’vegotthebeautifulyellowskin,blackeyesandblackhair.I’malsoproudthatIspeakthemostbeautifullanguageintheworld—Chinese.

Iloveyou,China,forIcanfeelthedeeploveyougivemeeveryday,everyminute.Lastyear,IgotanopportunitytovisittheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Duringmystayingthere,myfather’sbossonceinvitedmyfamilytodinner.Whileat,helookedatmeandasked:“Littleboy,howlonghaveyoubeeninAmerica?”

WhenIwasakid,professorHawkingwasknowntomeastheauthorofABriefHistoryofTime.Iboughtalotofsciencebooksbackthen,buttheywerereallydifficulttounderstand.WheneverIstumbled,Iwouldturntomyphysicsteacherforhelp.Wewouldgothroughpagesandpagesofmaterialstogether,whetheritwasmiddleschoolstufforFeynman’slecturefromCaltech,sometimeshoursonend.Ifeltlikeweweretearingoffthemaskofnatureandstaringatthefaceofgod.Itwashisguidancethatencouragedmetostudyphysicstoday.We’relivinginanerainwhichscienceisembeddedinpeople’slives.Fromteacherswhopassonknowledge,toconstructionworkerswhobuildlabs;fromorganizationsthatprovidefunding,toscientistswhoconductresearch,weallcontributetoscienceinourownuniqueways.Wethepeoplesaywe’reready.

OnOctober5th,2023,ChinafinallyhaditsfirstNobelPrizeinnaturalscience.Ms.TuYouyou’sworkandherreceivingthemostprestigiousscienceawardmadeusproud.We’relivinginanerainwhichChinaisbuildingsomeofthebestresearchprojectsandinstitutionsworldwide.Justamonthago,ProfessorZhangMimanwontheUNESCOforWomeninScienceAward,makingherthefifthChineserecipientofthishonor.Aweekafterthat,TheEconomistreferredtoChinaas“acontinent-sizedrapidlygrowingeconomywithacultureofscientificinquiry”.PhysicistandvicepresidentoftheChineseAcademyofScience,Dr.ZhangJiestated,“Chinanowhasthemostaccurate,sufficientandlargestamountofdata;Chinahasthehighest,fastestandbestabilityofdataanalysis.TheChinesegovernmentwillbestronglypushingforthesharingandutilizationofdataresources.”Weasacountrysaywe’reready.

Scienceisanimmortaltopicofmankind.We’vecomethisfarbecausewe’velearnedtoworktogetherandlettheideasevolve.Thedisputeoverthecompletenessofquantummechanics,forexample,wasresolvedinthe5thSolvayconference,attendedby29physicistsfrom10differentcountrieswhohavewon15NobelPrizescombined.Thatwasalmost100yearsago.Nowwe’relivinginanerainwhichinformationistransmittedatthespeedoflight,inwhich“Internationalcooperation”isnotjustaslogananymore,especiallytothescientificcommunity.ChineseAcademyofSciencenowhas47partnersoverseas.TheInternationalCouncilforSciencenowincludes122nationalmembers,23scientificassociatesand31scientificunions.ThefacilitiesoftheEuropeanOrganizationforNuclearResearch,orCERN,areavailabletoover600universitiesandinstitutesaroundtheglobe.We,theworld,aremorethanready.
