apriorithatsimilarSPEconditionswillnotbesuccessful.GeneralElutionProtocolsTherearetwogeneralstrategiesforisolatingandcleaningupsamplecomponentsofinterest:adsorbmatrixinterferenceswhilecomponentsofinterestpassthroughthecartridgeunretained.adsorbcomponentsofinterestwhilematrixinterferencespassthroughthecartridgeunretained.Thefirststrategyisusuallychosenwhenthedesiredsamplecomponentispresentinhighconcentration.Whencomponentsofinterestarepresentatlowlevels,ormultiplecomponentsofwidelydifferingpolaritiesneedtobeisolated,thenthesecondstrategyisgenerallyemployed.Traceenrichmentofcompoundspresentatextremelylowlevelsandconcentrationofdilutesamplesarealsoachievedbythesecondstrategy.StepsofaSolid-PhaseExtractionProcedureThefollowingsectiondescribesthestepsinvolvedinacompletesolid-phaseextractionprocedure.Inmanyapplications,oneormoreofthesteps,listedbelowandsubsequentlydescribedbygeneralexamples,canbeomitted,therebysimplifyingtheprocedure.Theproceduresillustratedhereusesamplescontainingdyessothatseparationsmaybeeasilyvisualized.Keepinmindthatmostsamplescontaincolorlesscomponentsthatrequiresometypeofdetectorortesttolocatetheminthecollectedfractions.Usethefollowinginformationasaguidelineinthedevelopmentofyourownprocedureorwhenmodifyingprocedurespublishedintheliterature.PretreatmentofthesampleConditioningofthecartridge(Silica,Florisil,Alumina,Diol,CN,NH
