Finally,afteralongwalk,wereachedthecampsiteandsetupthecampasthesunwassetting.Steveknewallthetricksofanexperiencedwildernesscamper.Afterwegatheredenoughwoodfromthe
forest,hestartedthecampfireusingonlystoneandsteel—nomatches.Forsupperwefeastedonfreeze-driedbeef,wildriceandpeasoup.Iategreedilyafterallthatwork.
Tiredenough,weclimbedintooursleepingbagsearlyandtalkedaboutourplansforfishingthenextday.Wewerestilltalkingquietlywhenasuddennorthwindpickedup;thetemperaturedroppedanditbegantosnow.Stevefoundawaytoincreasethetemperatureinsidethetent.Hedraggedalog(原木)fromtheforesttotheoppositesideofthecampfire.Thenhewrapped(包裹)aluminumfoil(鋁箔)aroundthelog.Theheatfromthefirereflectedoffthefoilandintothetent.Soonimagesoflakefishwerefillingmydreams.
Thesnowhadstopped,butsometimelaterapowerfulwindmusthavekickeduptheflamesofourdying
fire.IwasabruptlyawakenedbySteve.Ourtentwasonfire.Frightened,Iranoutofthetentimmediately.Thetentcollapsed(倒塌)withSteveinside.Withoutanythoughtofendangeringmyself,Ireachedintotheburningtentandpulledhimtotheicylake.Fortunately,wewerenotseriouslyhurt.
