Whatelsecanaworkerdo?First,seekoutamentoramongprojectleaders,
managersorothermoreseniors,moreexperiencedcolleagues.Second,many
businessesoffercommunications,assertivenessandteam-buildingtraining

contagion,hetoldtheWallStreetJournal,wouldproduce“shockwavesof
pessimismemanatingeverythreeorfourweeksinthestockmarket.”
Theprognosesgotdrearier,andbyOctober1998anolessaugustfigurethan
formerFedChairmanPaulVolckerintonedataspeechinWashington,
“Suddenly,itallseemsinjeopardy.Allthatrealgrowth-allthetrillionsin
paperwealthcreation-isatrisk.Whatstartedasablipontheradarscreenin
Thailand-aboutasfarawayfromWashingtonorNewYorkasyoucanget-
hassomehowturnedintosomethingofafinancialcontagion.”
Welltoday,lessthanayearandahalfafterthatspeechandjustover2anda
halfyearssincethefirswhiffofcrisis,thefinalgradesarein,andthe
pessimistsflunked.NotonlydidtheU.S.survivetheAsiancrisis-itroared
throughitwithbarelyagearshift.Neitherthebigdropinexportsthatwas
forecastnotthemysteriouscontagioneffecteverhittheU.S..
ArecentpostmortembytheFederalReserveBankofSt.Louisfoundthat
merchandiseexportstoAsiafell12%in1998andnotesthat-otherthings
beingequal-thismighthavecutGDPgrowthby0.4%.Butasisoftenthe
case,otherthingswerenotequal,andeventhatmodestdeclinenever
materialized.Onereasonisthatmanufacturersfoundothermarketsfortheir
goods.InCalifornia,forexample,exportstoEastAsianaccountedfor47%
ofallmanufacturedgoodsin1997.In1998exportstotheregiondropped
18.5%,butexportstoallcountriesfellbyonly1.6%.FortheU.S.asawhole,
merchandiseexportsin1998grew3%.
Whatabout“contagion”?Itwasalwaysaslipperyterm,usedwhentherewas
noapparentchainofeventsthatcouldproduceseriousdamagetotheU.S.
economy.Theimplicationwasthatthebankingsystemwouldbethepointof
infection.
Butoverall,U.S.banksweren’tthatheavilyexposedtotheAsianeconomy.
ArecentstudybytheFederalReserveBoardfoundthattotalU.S.bank
exposuretodevelopingcountrieswas$195billiononJune30,1997,with
exposuretothefive“troubled”economies-Indonesia,SouthKorea,Malaysia,
thePhilippines,andThailand-at$55billion.Whilethat’salotofmoney,it
wasjust1.9%oftotalbankassets.Abankingsystemaswellcapitalizedand
profitableasAmerica’scaneasilyhandlebadloansinthatrange.“Forthe
mostpart,”thestudysays,“U.S.banksdidnotsufferlargelossesstemming
directlyfromemergingmarketcrisesinrecentyears.When(individual)
