ofculturalheritageisevenwiderthanthat,andhasgraduallygrowntoincludeallevidenceof

humancreativityandexpression:photographs,documents,booksandmanuscripts,and

instruments,etc.eitherasindividualobjectsorascollections.Today,towns,underwaterheritage,

andthenaturalenvironmentarealsoconsideredpartofculturalheritagesincecommunities

identifythemselveswiththenaturallandscape.

Moreover,culturalheritageisnotonlylimitedtomaterialobjectsthatwecanseeandtouch.

Italsoconsistsofimmaterialelements:traditions,oralhistory,performingarts,socialpractices,

traditionalcraftsmanship,representations,rituals,knowledgeandSkillstransmittedfrom

generationtogenerationwithinacommunity.

Butculturalheritageisnotjustasetofculturalobjectsortraditionsfromthepast.Itisalso

theresultofaselectionprocess:aprocessofmemoryandforgetfulnessthatcharacterizesevery

humansocietyconstantlyengagedinchoosing——forbothculturalandpoliticalreasons——what

isworthyofbeingpreservedforfuturegenerationsandwhatisnot.

Allpeoplesmaketheircontributiontothecultureoftheworld.Thatswhyit,simportantto

respectandsafeguardallculturalheritage,throughnationallawsandinternationaltreaties.Illicit

traffickingOfartifactsandculturalobjects,pillagingOfarchaeologicalsites,anddestructionof

historicalbuildingsandmonumentscauseirreparabledamagetotheculturalheritageofa
