TheColosseumorFlavianAmphitheaterwasbegunbyVespasian,inauguratedbyTitusin80A.D.andcompletedbyDomitian.LocatedonmarshylandbetweentheEsquilineandCaelianHills,itwasthefirstpermanentamphitheatertobebuiltinRome.ItsmonumentalsizeandgrandeuraswellasitspracticalandefficientorganizationforproducingspectaclesandcontrollingthelargecrowdsmakeitoneofthegreatarchitecturalmonumentsachievedbytheancientRomans.

Theamphitheaterisavastellipsewithtiersofseatingfor50,000spectatorsaroundacentralellipticalarena.Belowthewoodenarenafloor,therewasacomple*setofroomsandpassagewaysforwildbeastsandotherprovisionsforstagingthespectacles.Eightywallsradiatefromthearenaandsupportvaultsforpassageways,stairwaysandthetiersofseats.Attheouteredgecircumferentialarcadeslinkeachlevelandthestairwaysbetweenlevels.

Thethreetiersofarcadesarefacedbythree-quartercolumnsandentablatures,Doricinthefirststory,Ionicinthesecond,andCorinthianinthethird.AbovethemisanatticstorywithCorinthianpilastersandsmallsquarewindowopeningsinalternatebays.Atthetopbracketsandsocketscarrythemastsfromwhichthevelarium,acanopyforshade,wassuspended.

Theconstructionutilizedacarefulcombinationoftypes:concreteforthefoundations,travertineforthepiersandarcades,tufainfillbetweenpiersforthewallsofthelowertwolevels,andbrick-facedconcreteusedfortheupperlevelsandformostofthevaults.

Details

TheColosseumwasdesignedtohold50,000spectators,andithadappro*imatelyeightyentrancessocrowdscouldarriveandleaveeasilyandquickly.

Theplanisavastellipse,measuringe*ternally188m*156m,withthebaseofthebuildingcoveringabout6acres.Vaultsspanbetweeneightyradialwallstosupporttiersofseatingandforpassagewaysandstairs.
