ofverbscanbefollowedbyanotherverbineitherthe"-ing"formorthe“to”form,forexample

“theylikedpainting/topaintv,“hedidn'tbothercalling/tocall”.Bothofthese

constructionsarestillusedbuttherehasbeenasteadyshiftovertimefromthe“to"tothe

“-ing”.
