somanygoodteachersandsuchmodernaudio-visualaids"saidmyfriend"it

isworthwhiletosendmydaughterthere."Yeahformostoftheparentsa

successfulchildistheultimateproofoftheirsuccess.SCHOOLKIDSGOING

TOEVENINGSCHOOLYesterdayeveningIdroppedinonafriendofmine

andfoundhistenyear-olddaughterhavinganearlysupperbyherself.Why

didn'tshehavesupperwiththefamily?"She'sgoingtoEnglishclassesinan

eveningschool,"explainedherfather.Thisisnotararecase.Myfriend's

daughterisjustoneofthousandsofschoolkidsaroundthecitywhoare

learningforeignlanguagesineveningschools.Asurveyconductedby

Shanghai'sMunicipalEducationBureauindicatesthatin2005,theenrollment

ofschoolpupilsindifferenteveningschoolsjumpedto80percent,compared

with4percentfourteenyearsago.Eveningschoolsandvarioustutoring

centershavemushroomedalloverthecitytocaternotonlyforon-thejob

adultsbutforschoolpupilsaswell.Whyaresomanyschoolkidsattending

languageeveningclasses?Themostobviousreasonisthatparentsare

attachingmuchimportancetohavingtheirchildrenmasteringaforeign

language.Inthisageofeconomicreforms,morepeoplehavecometorealize

thatthecommandofasecondlanguageoftenmeansagoodopportunityfor

asuccessfulcareer-apassporttoaprosperousfuture.Itistruethatmost

primaryschoolsinChinamakeEnglishacompulsorypartofthecurriculum,

butapupilbeginstolearnEnglishonlywhenheisinhisthirdorfourthgrade,

andthereareonlythreelessonperiodsperweek.Manyparents,whocannot

waittillthenordonotsettleforthelittleamountofEnglishtaughtatschool,

sendtheirchildrentolanguageschoolsintheeveninginthehopethatthey

willlearnitataneverearlierageandlearnmuchmoretobeaheadofthepack.

Andgoodteachersandadvancedequipmentalsoplayapartintheever

increasingenrollmentofeveningschoolstudents.Mostoftheteachersthere

arefromcollegesanduniversities.Seniorlecturersorprofessors,theyhave

iscurrentlyrecruitingvolunteersforanactivity-HarmoniousCommunity

aimingatbroadeningourvisionandhelpingusexploretheessenceof

harmony.Thisthemewillbehighlightedthroughaseriesofsocialworktobe

initiatedintheneighborhood.Attheoutsetwevolunteersaregoingtovisit

theSpecialEducationCenterandspecificallywithassignedtaskslike

teachingandsoon.Afterwardswearegoingtotakecareoftheseniorsatthe

HomefortheAged.Thenwewilltakepartinthepublicityactivitiesinthe
