Iwasforcedtopostponecollege,plungedintopainfultherapy...buteventually,Ialsolearnedmuchaboutlifeandmyself.Ifoundthestrengthtowithstandadversity,learnedcompassion,andaboveall,Ilearnedthattheroadnottakenisnotjustaboutregretsorchoicesbutalsoabouttheperpetualnowandthealways-comingfuture.

WhenIfirststudiedRobertFrosts“TheRoadNotTaken”inmiddleschool,Iwasunabletograspitsambiguity.IalwaysthoughtthatFrostspersonachooses“aroadlesstraveledby”andliveslifebeingsubversiveandirreverent.Iwaswrong.Inthepoem,bothofthetworoadsthat“divergedinayellowwood”areactually“aboutthesame.”Buttherehastobeachoice,andsometimes,theyitcanbeinvoluntary(asIlearnedthehardway).ThismakesmeextremelythankfulandresolutewhenIcanmakeconsciouschoicesandplanforthefuture,andsoIknownowthatFrostspoemisalsoabouttheroadnot[yet]taken.

Foreveryone,thismeanssomethingslightlydifferent.Forme,itmeansconstantvigilance,learning,andlove.Ourjourneyishard,complex,anditoftenpresentsunexpectedtwists,butreflectingontheroadsnottakenandnotyettakeneachdaygivesusalittlemorestrengthandconfidence.Lifecannotandwillnotmeperfect,andthetruthisitwillend.ButasWillaCatherwouldsay,“Theendisnothing,theroadisall.”Theroadnottakeninthepast,andtheroadnotyettakenthatliesahead.

Ibowedmyhead;yes,shewasright.BythenIwasenteringGradeSix,facedwiththebiggestchallengeyettocometheexaminationtoentermydreamjuniorhighschool.Forthat,Ihadgivenupmybelovedpianolesson,myfavoritecartoonprogramandeventheplayfulweekendfamilyreunionwithmycousins.Iwouldntbesurprisedatallifmyvery-strict-university-teachermothergotfuriousatmewhenIchosetodoanythingbesidesstudyatthatcrucialmoment.

Butthatsnotalltoit.Nowpleasetakeagoodlookatthetwenty-year-oldme,andimaginewhatIwaslikewhenIwasten.Herearethekeywords:nervous,timid,shy,tongue-tiedwhenfacingstrangers,andessentiallyabookworm.Thesesignslookedfataltomymother,andpossiblytoyou,too;shethoughtthatIcouldbeanythingbutagoodpublicspeaker.

Theten-year-oldmewaspersuadedbymyteacherswords.Thefeelingoftellingmybelovedstoriestosomeoneelseignitedasparkofanticipationinmylittlechest.SoIchosetoenduremymothersrantingforanentirehour,thenraisedmyheadbravelyandpleaded:“Mom,please.Ijustwanttotry.”

Mymotherlookedasifshewasonthevergeofanotheroutburstbutsheonlysighed.Itookthatasherpermission,andstartedworkingwithmyteacherdayandnighttofindastory,toillustratethedetails,andtopracticemyfacialexpressionsandgesturesinfrontofthemirror.Onthedayofthecompetition,Iwentonthestagefortheveryfirsttimeinmylife;Icouldfeelthenervousnessthreateningtobringmedown,andIfeltcheatedbymyteacher:itwasimpossibletopicturethejudgesasmerecarrotsandcabbages.ButIwenton.AlthoughIonlygotthethirdprizeatthattime,onthatstageIstayedeversince,eventothisverymoment.

AndhadInotspentthelast2weekspainfullypreparingforthespeechcontest,Iwouldnthavehadachancetothinkaboutthisworld,toponderonlifeandtoformabetterunderstandingofmyself.

Forallmyblessings,Iowemylifeanattitudeofgratitude.FromtimetotimeIwouldpicturemyselfworkinginmyownstudio,designingabeautifulvilla.ButIwillnotregretit,becauseImhappywithwhoIam,andIlovewhatIhave.

Overtheyears,Ivehadmyfairshareofcutsandbruises,butthescarsleftbehindarethetestimonyofmyownuniqueexperiencesandthefulfillinglifethatIwanttopursue.OurtimeislimitedandIwanttoexperienceasmuchaslifecanoffer.Myhappinesscomesfromlivinganexcitingandworthylife,truetomyselfandtruetotheworld.

Ifpersonalhappinesswereaselfportrait,theneachdaywouldbeastrokeofthebrush,eachexperienceasplashofvividpaint.Andwhenweareold,wecanlookbackuponourlifeandthedotswillconnect,everybrushofcolorwillcometogetherandrevealalifeworthlivingandapersonworthbeing.
