IwasalwaysawareGrannylovedus.Itwassomethingyoucouldfeelwithyourheart,evenwhenyourworldwasturnedupsidedown.

Shedidn’tliveinafancyhouseorhaveexpensivethings,butInevernoticed;IjustknewshelovedmeandIlovedherback.

Wehadlived,foratime,nextdoortoherandgrandpainaduplexwhilemyfatherwasawayduringWorldWarII.

Grannyhadneverhadverymuchinthewayofmoneyormaterialthings.Butitwasthelittlethingsshegavemethathadalwaysmattered.Thingslikelettingmedipmyfingersinthesugarbowl,whichwasalwayssittingonhertableorthecoffeesheletmesipfromhercup.SheallowedmetositontopofherkitchentableasIpartookofthoseprivileges.

Grannytookthetimetoexplainthefunctionofherweathervane,hangingonthewall,whichpredictedtheupcomingweather.Howthatlittlewoodenboyandgirlknewwhatdoortocomeoutof,whenitwasgoingtorain,amazedme.ButGrannyunderstood.

Shealsohadavinegarcruetthatsathighonashelfthatwasbeautiful,inmyeyes;IaskedifIcouldhaveitsomeday.Itwasgiventomeinaboxafterherfuneral.Sheremembered;loveislikethat.

IusedtospendalotoftimewithGrannywhenwelivedinCairo,nextdoortoherandgranndpa,intheduplex.Buttimesandthingshadchanged.Grandpahaddied;welivedahundredmilesaway,anddad,heryoungestson,mydaddy,nolongerlivedwithus.Ididn’tgettoseedadmuch,andIdon’tknowifGrannygottoseehimveryofteneither.But,hewasherson,andIknewshelovedhim.Loveislikethat;itcanseepastthepain.

Thoughshedidn’thavemuch,neitherdidwe,butshedidsomethingformybrother,Tommieandme.Iwillalwaysremember;shesavedherpenniesinaglassjar.IamsureGrannycouldhaveusedthosepenniesherselfbutshesavedthemtogiveuswhenwecametovisit.BecauseIwastheoldestIwasinchargeofdividingthepenniesequallybetweenmybrotherandme.“Oneforyou,oneforme,”Iwouldrepeatuntilthejarwasempty.

Idon’trememberhowmuchwecollectedonourvisits,norwastheamountimportant.Itwastheideathatsherememberedus,andcaredaboutus,whenwewereawayfromher.

Thosememories,ofwhenIwasachild,stillgivemewarmfuzzyfeelingsondaysthatIneedthem.AGranny’slovestayswithagrandchild,downthroughtheyears,evenwhenthatchildbecomesagrandmaherself.Ioftenwonder,afterallthoseyears,whenIamluckyenoughtofindapennylyingonthegroundsomewhere,ifitcouldpossiblebeGrannytossingmepenniesfromheaven.
