Whataregames?Languagegamesarenotactivitiesmainlyaimedtobreaktheicebetweenstudentsortokilltime.Byrne(1995)gavethedefinitiontogamesasaformofplaygovernedbyrules.

Theyshouldbeenjoyedandfun.Theyarenotjustadiversion,abreakfromroutineactivities,butawayofgettingthelearnertousethelanguageinthecourseofthegame.Similarly,JillHadfield(1990)definedgamesas“anactivitywithrules,agoalandanelementoffun.”(是一種有規(guī)則、有目標(biāo)和有趣味的活動。)Whataregames?Therefore,gamesinvolvemanyfactors:rules(規(guī)則),competition(競賽),relaxation(放松),andlearning(學(xué)習(xí)),inparticular.

語言訓(xùn)練游戲教師能夠較好控制學(xué)習(xí)語言;而交際性游戲則較難預(yù)測具體會使用到的語言。Thelanguagerequirementofthecommunication-focusedgamesismoreadvancedthanthatoflanguage-focusedones,becausethesegamesareintendedontheoveralllanguageabilityoflearners.
