WhatisDELTA?

IfyouhavesubstantialexperienceofteachingEnglishtospeakersofotherlanguages,andarereadytoprogressyourcareer,youneedDELTA.Thisinternationallyrecognisedqualificationhelpsyouto:

deepenyourunderstandingoftheprinciplesandpracticeofteachingtheEnglishLanguagetoadults

examineyourcurrentpracticesandbeliefs

applytheresultsofyourlearningandreflectiontoyourcurrentteachingpositionandmoreseniorroles.

HowdoesDELTArelatetoTEFL/TESOL?

'TEFL'or'TESOL'aretermsoftenusedtodescribequalificationsforEnglishLanguageteachers.DELTA,theadvancedTESOL/TEFLqualificationforpractisingEnglishLanguageteachers,waspreviouslyknownasDTEFLAandthe'RSAdiploma'.

WhoisDELTAfor?

Youmaybeagraduate,oralreadyholdaninitialteachingqualification,andareconsideringDELTAasaroutetofurthercareerprogression.Thequalificationisidealifyouwishtoextendyourprofessionalexperienceandacceptnewresponsibilitiesasitnotonlydemonstratesacommitmenttotheprofession,butisalsoproofofyourability.

YoumaybelookingforanopportunitytoincreaseyourunderstandingoftheprinciplesandpracticeofEnglishLanguageteachingtohelpimproveyouroverallperformanceintheclassroom.Aspartofthisprocess,DELTAcoursesencourageyoutoanalyseyourexistingpracticesandbeliefs.Theyalsohelpyoutoapplytheresultsofyourlearningandreflectionbothtoyourcurrentprofessionallifeandtocontextsbeyondyourpresentandpreviousteachingexperience.

WhatdoesDELTAinvolve?

YoucantakeDELTAfulltime(typicallytwotothreemonths),orparttime(fromsixmonthstooverayear).YourcoursefeaturesabalanceoftheoryandpracticetoenhanceyourunderstandingoftheEnglishLanguage,whileexaminingindepththeprinciplesofeffectiveteachingandthepracticalskillsrequiredforteachingEnglishtoadultlearners.

Thecourseincludes:

teachingpractice

observationofexperiencedteachersintheclassroom

completionofarangeofpracticallyfocusedwrittenassignments

anextendedassignment

awrittenexamination.

Therearesixmainunitsoflearning:

Professionaldevelopment

Aspartofyourcourseyoushouldexpect120contacthourswithfellowcandidatesandcoursetutorsandtenhoursofteachingadults.Fouroftheselessonsaresupervisedandassessedbyacoursetutorandoneisexternallyassessed.Inadditionyouhavetenhours'directedobservationoflessons,withfiveofthesebeinglivelessonstaughtbyexperiencedteachers.Youspendaround300hoursonreading,researchandassignmentwriting.

Therearethreecomponentsofassessment:

Coursework

Therearesevencourseworkassignments.Sixoftheseareinternallyassessed;theseventhisexternallyassessed.InadditionthereisoverallexternalmoderationofyourcourseworkbyCambridgeESOL.

Extendedassignment

Theextendedassignmentisacasestudyofalearner.Itissupervisedbythecentreandexternallymarked.

Writtenexamination

Thewrittenexaminationisexternallysetandmarked.

TobeawardedtheDiploma,youmustpassallthreecomponents.Therearetwogrades-PassandDistinction.

WhorecognisesDELTA?

DELTAisacceptedthroughouttheworldbyorganisationswhichemployEnglishLanguageteachers.TheCambridgeDELTAhasbeenaccreditedbytheQualificationsandCurriculumAuthority(QCA)asaDiplomainTeachingESOLatlevel5ontheNationalQualificationsFramework.DELTAisalsointegratedintosomeMAprogrammes.CambridgeESOLalsoworkswithinternationalELTorganisationstoensuretheacceptanceofDELTAglobally.

AmIeligibletoapply?

Ideallyyoushould:

haveatleasttwoyears'fulltime(1,200hours)experienceofteachingEnglishtoadultswithinthepastfiveyears

havearangeofteachingexperienceindifferentcontextsandatdifferentlevels

beagraduateand/orhaveaninitialteachingqualification

haveastandardofEnglishwhichwillenableyoutoteachatarangeoflevels.

Centresmaystillacceptyouifyoudonotstrictlymeetalloftheserequirementsbutcandemonstratethatyouwouldbelikelytocompletethecoursesuccessfully.Thisisentirelyatyourcentre'sdiscretion.

DELTAcoursesaredesignedbyindividualcentres,basedonspecificationsproducedbyCambridgeESOL.

Followingacomprehensivereview,amodularDELTAsyllabusisbeingproduced,whichwillreplacethecurrentsyllabusfromSeptember2008.
