surprisedbywideblackpessimism.
Butthatpessimismdoesn'texist.Indeed,accordingtothelatestGalluppollonthenation^
currentstanding,AfricanAmericans-andotherminorities一areamongthemostoptimistic
peopleinthecountry.
Asofthismonth,57%ofnonwhitessaythatthecountry'sstandinglooksgood,comparedto
33%ofwhites.What'smore,nonwhitesconsistentlyshowhigherlevelsofoptimismforthefuture
thantheirwhitecounterparts.
Thisisn'thardtoexplain:Forasmuchas**munitiescontinuetofacetoughchallenges,they
aren'tassevereastheywereinthepast;formanyAfricanAmericans,Latinos,andAsian
