wasaFrenchwriterand
pilot.Asayoungboy,
hewasobsessedwith
aeroplanes,ridinginone
forthefirsttimeatthe
ageof12.Hespentmuchofhislifeflying
andwritingabouthisadventures.Saint-Exupéry’smostsuccessfulwork,TheLittle
Prince,isoneofthebest-sellingbooksever
published.Thestorywasprobablyinspired
byhisplanecrashinthedesertin1935.Saint-Exupérynearlydied,andwandered
aroundforfourdaysbeforebeingrescued.
In1944,Saint-Exupéryleftonawartime
missionoveroccupiedFrance,fromwhich
heneverreturned.Althoughtheremainsof
hisplanewerediscoveredin2000,Saint-Exupéry’sbodyhasneverbeenfound,and
thecauseofhisdeathremainsunknown.1.WhatexperiencemadetheauthorwriteTheLittlePrince?Thestorywasprobablyinspiredbyhisplanecrashinthedesertin1935.2.WhatkindofpersondoyouthinktheSaint-Exupéry
was?Hewasapersonwithgreatimagination.Lookatthethreedrawingsandpredictwhatthestoryisabout.Nowreadthepassageandcheckyour
prediction.OncewhenIwassixyearsold
Isawamagnificentpictureina
book,calledTrueStoriesfrom
Nature,abouttheprimevalforest.
Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictor
intheactofswallowingananimal.
Hereisacopyofthedrawing.Inthebookitsaid:“Boa
constrictorsswallowtheirprey
whole,withoutchewingit.After
thattheyarenotabletomove,and
theysleepthroughthesixmonths
thattheyneedfordigestion.”Ipondereddeeply,then,overthe
adventuresofthejungle.Andafter
someworkwithacoloredpencil
Isucceededinmakingmyfirst
drawing.MyDrawingNumber
One.Itlookedlikethis:Ishowedmymasterpiecetothegrown-ups,andaskedthemwhetherthedrawingfrightenedthem.Buttheyanswered:“Frighten?Whyshouldanyonebefrightenedbyahat?”Mydrawingwasnotapictureofahat.
Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictor
digestinganelephant.Butsincethe
grown-upswerenotabletounderstand
it,Imadeanotherdrawing:Idrewthe
insideoftheboaconstrictor,sothat
thegrown-upscouldseeitclearly.They
alwaysneedtohavethingsexplained.
MyDrawingNumberTwolookedlike
this:Thegrown-ups’response,thistime,was
toadvisemetolayasidemydrawingsofboaconstrictors,whetherfromtheinsideortheoutside,anddevotemyselfinsteadtogeography,history,arithmeticandgrammar.Thatiswhy,attheageofsix,Igaveupwhatmighthavebeenamagnificentcareerasapainter.IhadbeendisheartenedbythefailureofmyDrawingNumberOneandmyDrawingNumberTwo.Grown-upsneverunderstandanythingbythemselves,anditistiresomeforchildrentobealwaysandforeverexplainingthingstothem.SothenIchoseanotherprofession,and
learnedtopilotairplanes.Ihaveflowna
littleoverallpartsoftheworld;anditistrue
thatgeographyhasbeenveryusefultome.AtaglanceIcandistinguishChinafromArizona.Ifonegetslostinthenight,suchknowledgeisvaluable.Inthecourseofthislife,Ihavehadagreatmanyencounterswithagreat
manypeoplewhohavebeenconcernedwithmattersofconsequence.I
havelivedagreatdealamonggrown-ups.Ihaveseenthemintimately,
closeathand.Andthathasn’tmuchimprovedmyopinionofthem.WheneverImetoneofthemwhoseemedtomeatallclear-sighted,I
triedtheexperimentofshowinghimmyDrawingNumberOne,whichI
havealwayskept.Iwouldtrytofindout,so,ifthiswasapersonoftrue
understanding.But,whoeveritwas,he,orshe,wouldalwayssay:
“Thatisahat.”ThenIwouldnevertalktothatpersonabout
boaconstrictors,orprimevalforests,orstars.
Iwouldbringmyselfdowntohislevel.I
wouldtalktohimaboutbridge,andgolf,
andpolitics,andneckties.Andthegrown-upwouldbegreatlypleasedtohavemetsucha
sensibleman.
