Youyou

wasamong

researchers

YouyouwenttoHainan,where

malariawas

more

common,to

study

malaria

project

tested380distinctancientChinesemedicaltreatmentsthatshowedpromisein

fight

against

malaria.One

medicaltextfrom

the

fourthcenturysuggested

usingtheextractfromsweetwormwoodtotreatafever.Tu'steamtestedacollectionofdriedwormwood

leaves

but

foundno

effect.They

then

tried

bolling

freshwormwood,and

using

the

liquidobtainedfromthistotreatmalaria,butthis

did

notworkeither.Their

project

got

stuck.However,Tu

Youyouwould

not

acknowledgedefeat

.She

analysed

themedicaltextsagain,and

by

chance,shefound

onesentence

suggestinga

different

way

to

treat

the

wormwood.She

concludedthat

boing

the

sweet

wormwoodapparentlydestroved

its

medicalpropertfies.Using

alowertemperature

to

draw

out

the

extract,she

foundasubstancethatworked.Afterfailingmorethan190

times,the

teamfinaly

succeeded

in1971.

TuYouyouandherteammemberseven

insisted

on

testing

the

medicine

onthemselvesto

make

sure

thatit

was

safe.Later,the

medicine

was

tested

onmalariapatients,mostofwhomrecovered.Thismedicine,whichwascalledartemisinin,soonbecameastandardtreatmentformalaria.AccordingtoTuYouyou,thediscoveryof

artemisininwasateameffort.Uponhearinthatshehad

beenawarded

the

Nobel

Prize,she

said,"The

honour

isnot

justmine.Thereisateam
