Origins

SteveRogers,themanwhowouldbecomeCaptainAmerica,wasoriginallyafrailandsicklyartstudentlivinginNewYorkCityduringthe1930s.HewasconstantlybulliedandhadnochanceofenlistinginthearmyduringWorldWarII.However,hiswillanddeterminationcaughttheattentionofDr.AbrahamErskine,amilitaryscientistwhowasdevelopingasuper-soldierserum.Rogerswaschosentobethefirsttestsubject,andhewasinjectedwiththeserum,whichtransformedhisbodyintothatofapeakhuman.

Initiallyintendedtoonlybeasymbolofpatriotism,CaptainAmerica'sfirstmissionwastostoptheRedSkull,aNaziagent,fromsabotaginganexperimentalairplane.Hewasgivenauniform,shield,andcodename,andsoonbecameinvolvedinmanymoremissionsagainsttheAxispowers.CaptainAmericaquicklybecameapopularsymbolofhopeandfreedom,bothonthefrontlinesandathome,inspiringmanyAmericanstotakeactioninWorldWarII.

Comics

CaptainAmerica'sfirstcomicbookappearancewasinCaptainAmericaComics#1,whichwaspublishedbyTimelyComics(laterknownasMarvelComics)inMarch1941.Thecomicbook,whichwascreatedbyJackKirbyandJoeSimon,wasaninstanthit,andCaptainAmericaquicklybecameoneofthemostpopularcomicbookcharactersofthe1940s.
