IttookSchultzayeartoconvincetheStarbucksownerstohirehim.Whentheyfinally

madehimdirectorofmarketingandoperationsin1982,hehadanotheridea.Thisone

occurredinItaly,whenSchultznoticedthecoffeebarsthatexistedonalmostevery

block.Helearnedthattheynotonlyservedexcellentespressos(蒸餾咖啡),theyalso

servedasmeetingplacesorpublicsquares,andtherewere200,000oftheminthe

country.

ButwhenhecamebacktoSeattle,theStarbucksownersresistedSchultz’splansto

servecoffeeinthestores,sayingtherestaurantbusinesswascompetitive,anditwas

motivator.Frustrated,Schultzquitandstartedhisowncoffee-barbusinessin1985,

Chinese,buthedidnotknowhowtoread.ToSears,thecharacterswerecomplexwith

manystrokesandalmostnoapparentlogic.

“I’maphysicist,soIdon’tlikeblindmemorizationinlearninglanguages.Iknewthat

Chinesecharacterscamefrompictographs(象形文字)andIwantedtoknowthestories

behindtheChinesecharacters.”Ashestudied,Searsrealizedquicklythatmanyofthe

explanationscouldnotpossiblybetrue.Inordertopickoutthegoodones,hedecided

tocomputerizethecharacters.Hescannedabout96,000ancientcharacters.

Thedatabaseofancientcharacterscameintobeing,buthewantedtoexplainthestep

-by-stepevolvementofthesecharactersfromtheoriginalpictographstothemodern

simplifiedforms.Hefinallygothiswebsiteupin2002andnameditChinese

15,000hitsaday.Suddenly,inJanuary2011,clickstothewebsitewentupto600,

000inoneday.OvernighthebecameUncleHanzi,anicknamegivenbyChinese

netizens,afteroneofthemsharedhiswebsiteonChinesesocialmedia.

Inadditiontothewebsite,inSeptemberlastyear,Searssetuphisstudio,focusingon

applyingAR,animationandartificialintelligencetotellingstoriesofChineseculture

andcharacterorigins,inNanjingaspartofthelocalauthority’splantocultivatetalent

intheculturesector.“TheyhavebothentertainmentvalueforyoungChineseand

educationalvalueandcanteachtheoriginsofChinesecharacters,”hesays.“Wealso
