ofanyothersinglethingthatrepresentsmodemAmericaaspowerfully

asthecompanythatcreatedMickeyMouse.Globally,brandsIikeCoca-

ColaandMcDonaIdsmaybemorewidely-known,butneitherencapsulates

20th-centuryAmericainquitethesamewayasDisney.

ThereasonsforDisney'ssuccessarcvariedandnumerous,but

u11imateIythecreditbelongstooneperson-themanwhocreatedthe

cartoonandbuiltthecompanyfromnothing,Wa11Disney.IronicaIIyrhe

couldnotdrawparticularlywell.ButbewasageniusinpIentyofother

AmericanWayofLife,byStevenWatts,confirmsthathewasvery

definiteIyonthesideofordinaryAmericans-inthe30sand40shevoted

forFranklinRovsevelt,beIievinghewasachampionoftheworkers.Also.

DisneywasnotanapoIogistfortheFBI,assomehavesuggested.Infact,

hewasaIwayssuspiciousoflarge,bureaucraticorganisatioustasis

evidencedinfiImslikeThatDarnedCat,inwhichheportrayedFBIagents

Thenext,andthreesucceedingbiennialelections,IwaseIectedtothe

Legislature.Iwasnotacandidateafterwards.Duringthislegislative

periodIhadstudiedlaw,andremovedtoSpringfieldtopracticeit.

In1846,IwasonceeIectedtothelowerHouseofCongress.Wasnota

candidateforreelectionFrom1849to1854,bothinclusive,practiced

lawmoreassiduouslythaneverbefore.AIwaysawhiginpolitics,and

generallyonthewhigelectoraltickets,makingactivecanvasses.Iwas

losinginterestinpoliticsrwhentherepealoftheMissouriCompromise
