Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包裝). On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying. I promised you a gift, and here it is. What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it! One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as hopeless, pitiful, and dying, which sounded ominous. Christmas was coming. Dont expect any presents this year. Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. If your baby brother lives, thatll be Christmas enough. As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears. Id never seen him cry before. The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. What? Hes all right? He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home! Thank God. I heard Mum cry. From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. So its a good idea to get along well with neighbors and build a better relationship that will last for many years to come. But how should you get along with your neighbors? When you hear of a special need you can meet, do it, such as sitting with a sick child while your neighbor goes to work or taking an elderly parent to a doctors appointment when their car wont start. If you hear that someone close by is ill, has had an accident, or is out of work, give him a hot meal or a fresh dessert. Your kindness will add a special feeling during a difficult time. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for - its stadium and theatre, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeiis people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years. Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius (維蘇威火山) , a grass-covered volcano (火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted (爆發(fā)) for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not. In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20, 000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in even bakery (面包房). In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread - a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup . Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.33Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?A. To visit the volcano.B. To shop and eat there.C. To watch sports and plays. D. To see how Pompeiians lived34. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?A. Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.B. Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.C. Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.D. Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.35.What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2000 years ago?A .They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.B They liked women wearing all kings of makeup.C They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.D They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。 36 You can find it on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and trash cans from Tokyo to Paris, from Moscow to Cape Town. Art experts say that the street art movement began in New York in the 1960s. Young adults painted words and other images on the walls and trains. This colourful style of writing became known as graffiti(涂鴉), whose art showed that young people wanted to rebel against society. Street artists do their work for different reasons. 38 They choose street art because it is closer to the people. Some artists try to express their political opinion in their works. Others like to do things that are not allowed and hope they cant be caught. Advertising companies also use street art in their ads because it gives people the impressions of youth and energy. 39 Artists can show their pictures to people all over the world.
