2 Dim Expectations I was utterly disappointed by the latest BBC s adaptation of Dickens Great Expectations I had high hopes when I watched the first episode thought they had made great casting choice The boy who played young Pip was excellent Ray Winston was a good choice for Magwitch and I quite liked Gillian Anderson s interpretation of Miss H Then the grown up Pip and Estella arrived promptly at the second episode Pip looked like a time traveller being teleported back to 1800s from a 21st century public school with his fancy dress and finely plucked eyebrows When he first showed up he was already well suited to the upper class without any training required his well powdered face had no trace of a day s hard work at the forge and what s more I noticed that he had highlights in his hair Highlights in 1800s BBC you got to be joking Estella was so plain looking and dead eyed her manly shoulders and twitchy lips conveyed no beauty and cold heartedness of a Dickens Estella she truly turned my heart stone cold I came to the sad conclusion that both actors could not act they made the whole adaptation a pointless exercise On the story front the last two episodes were so rushed the director and scriptwriter were determined to make this into a 1800s Eastenders with many great characters deleted and plots altered Although Shaun Dooley s portray of Joe embodied much love and warmth without his funny accent phrases and Biddy he was incomplete And what happened to Mr Jaggers OCD where is his soap smell And and they bigged up Orlick s part and made him to have a punch up with Pip at the end after he got knocked down by Pip and he was just left lying on the floor viewers were given no clue whether he was dead I know sometimes one have to make sacrifices when doing an adaptation but to make so many alterations to a beloved story is sacrilegious The only saving grace is the marshland it is truly stunning to see it in colour A lager room where curtains were closed to allow no daylight in and the candles were lit in the centre of the room there was a table at which was a lady She was wearing a dressmade of rich material She had a bride s flowers in her hair but herhair was white There were suitcases full of dresses and jewels around her ready for a journey She only had one white shoe on the white wedding dress had became yellow and the flowers in her hair was died and the bride inside the dress had grown old Everything in the room was ancient and dying the only brightness in the room was in her dark old eyes Who was the lady She was Miss havisham a pitiful lady Her mother died young Her farther was very rich and very proud with only one child Miss Havisham by his first wife Then he married his cook and had a son by her This son a half brther to Miss havisham was a bad character and did not inherit as mush from his farther as Miss Havisham He fund a man The man pretended he was in love with Miss havisham She was certainly in love with him and give him whatever money he asked for The couple fixed the wedding day the guest were invited The dress and the cake were brought in the room The day came but the man did not came He broke her heart She was angry She wanted revenge She adopt Estella She wanted she to revenge She said to Pip who was deeply in love with Estella love her love her love her If she likes you love her If she hurt you love her if she tears your heart to pieces love her But she did not want Estella to marry Pip She let her marry another person who Estella did not love This is the story of Miss Havisham She was hurt by a person She wanted to hurt other persons And she had done This is no good for her Only made her feel a little comfortable and there was more victims in the world there are so many persons in the world when they were hurt they want to hurt other innocent persons Athough this is no goodnfor them but they did so I do not know why they did so Revenge Made the world full of hateness It is difficult to understand Joe was very different from Miss Havisham His farther drank a lot and when he drank he used to hit his mother and Joe Joe s mother and Joe ran away fromhim but he found them and took them home and hit them but Jos said that his farther had a good heart It is difficult to understand Pip s sister Joe s wife a rude lady She liked to be in charge and give orders But Joe did not rebel He said that when he thought of his por mother s hard life he was not afraid of not behaving right to a woman so he d rather seem a bit weak her than shouted at her or hurt her or hit her He felt soory that she scrolded Pip as well He wished that he could take all the scolding himself What a kind person Joe is other kind of person When he was hurt he would not let other peole suffer from it he is very different from Miss Havisham If there are more Jes live in the world what the world will be All of us can imagine I did not say Joe is a very good person I only say if sme one hurt you It is his faults and you can revenge t him Please do not hurt other innocent poele Miss Havisham and Joe are two persons made me think a lot in this book Their different outlook on life Pip is also an important persoon in the story He fall in love with Estella He studied as hard as he could educating himself for her Why did he love her Because she is pretty Because she is rich Because she is proud She did not treat him well She give something eat to him She put some bread and meat on the groundfor him like a dog but he did not hate her he loved her as well Beacause Pip loved her he filt ashamed of his friends he left from his home and his friends I think it is not worth at all If one persn do nt like you and treat you not vell Why do you like he That s my thoughts Plot summary Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Philip Pirrip who is known as Pip because not surprisingly he finds it difficult to pronounce his name has a terrifying childhood experience in a graveyard on the Kent marshes A prisoner who has escaped from a nearby prison ship grabs hold of Pip and demands that he fetch food and a file to remove his manacles Pip is an orphan and he lives with his older sister and her husband Joe Gargery a village blacksmith Soldiers come to the forge to repair some manacles and then set off to search for the convict whose name is Abel Magwitch The latter allows himself to be caught because the same fate then awaits his fellow escapee the hated Compeyson Pip is invited to Satis House ostensibly to be the playmate of Estella who is the ward of Miss Havisham a recluse who many years previously had been jilted at the altar For Miss Havisham time stood still on that day so the clocks are never wound the wedding cake stands where it always did now covered in cobwebs and she still wears her wedding dress She has sworn to revenge herself on men and she is bringing Estella up to think the same way However Pip falls in love with Estella and at Satis House he also meets a boy of his own age who is playing in the grounds This is Herbert Pocket Jaggers who is Miss Havisham s lawyer comes to the forge where Pip is apprenticed to Joe to tell Pip that he has great expectations that will come to him from an unknown benefactor whom Pip assumes must be Miss Havisham Joe releases Pip from his apprenticeship and he travels to London where he is befriended by Wemmick Jaggers s clerk and Herbert Pocket Meanwhile his sister Mrs Joe is brutally murdered at the forge Pip has a hard time of it in London including financial difficulties caused by his belief in those great expectations coming to fruition and the knowledge that Estella has rejected him in favour of Bentley Drummle The worst shock is the reappearance of Magwitch who has escaped from the penal colony in Australia to which he had been transported Magwitch tells him that it is he and not Miss Havisham who is his mysterious benefactor However this horrifies the somewhat snobbish Pip and he determines to help Magwitch to get out of the country Returning to Satis House Pip asks Miss Havisham for help to set Herbert Pocket up in business However she gets too close to the open fire and her dress catches light Pip is able to douse the flames but Miss Havisham dies from her burns Before she does so she implores Pip s forgiveness and gives him clues that Estella is the daughter of Magwitch and Jaggers s housekeeper Pip gets a mysterious message that calls him back to the Kent marshes There he is nearly killed by Orlick who works with Joe and who is revealed to be the murderer of Mrs Joe Pip is rescued by Herbert Pip and Herbert return to London where they are about to execute Magwitch s escape but they learn that they are being watched The plan is to take a boat down the river but they are intercepted by officers who are guided by Compeyson In the struggle Magwitch is wounded and Compeyson drowns Magwitch is condemned to hang but dies before this can happen Pip returns to the forge intending to propose to his childhood sweetheart Biddy but finds that she has married Joe Pip goes to Egypt to join Herbert Pocket s shipping firm and only returns several years later to find and marry Estella who is now widowed Women s inferior state thoughts on Great Expectations Dickens is not a writer disdaining women Instead he loves respects and takes care of t hem However in his novels he unconsciously degrades women and puts them inferior to men Great Expectations is evidence to my thesis There are three aspects in this novel that I believe this kind of thought of Dickens is revea led The first one is that women are fragile That is not because those women are in lack of will but that they need surviving abilities and that of self survival and struggle against destiny They always turn to men That can be called hero saving th e beauty This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively The only dif ference between them lies in the plot and structure Estella is adopted and trained to break men s hearts by Miss Havisham Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy tho ugh Pip deeply loves Estella Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy fo r a man Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella However Estella suffers a lot and begins t o regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure Then comes my second point Facing destiny women are physically and intellectually infer ior to men Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence but that it seems so Or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence but women never show a lot God creates everyone equally but not everyone is granted the same approaches to s uccess or achievements Women are restricted to families which restricts them from showing a l ot They can cook food well which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness The ordinary intelligence of wo men in marriage and love is exposed completely Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day bu t she keeps the room like the day she got married while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male The discipline for women is my third point A feminist De Bufuwa says One is called wom an because she is made not born Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracio us or good women by social criteria which emphasizes on families the responsibilities for their h usbands and their dependence on men In Great Expectations Estella and Havisham s misfortun es are closely attached to love and marriage They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men Es tella leaves Pip but at last she comes back to him And Havisham keeps thinking about her marri age day and her husband So in Dickens s novel women are decent on surface but failed in hear t Every period has an outstanding feature which make descendants linger in mind To learn thi s novel can help us in understanding better women s efforts to stand up Society presses public t o believe that male plays a dominant role Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then Sh e needs a male accompany Her ending somewhat is tragic but Estella harvests through a long ti me but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook And to conclude my opinion in one sentence I should say women depend on men That is not my opinion but what I get I have t o mention that again since I myself is one part of that group and I am not willing to take a subord inate role in both family and society Great Expectations Great expectations is one of Dicken s most maturest works After Dicken had experienced large part of meaningful life he had a deeper cognition for people environment as well as the life which he had gone through And all the mature cognitions are included in this writing Great expectations pip was brought up by his sister who was unpleasant as well as crude and her friendly blacksmith husband Joe Joe himself had arranged a common hard but satisfied path for pip to go through and on the other hand pip beheld this as his highest goal to achieve But the two things which he had experienced later had changed his pursue and his fate as well Met Abel Magwith an escaped convict in the swamp and unwillingly helped him out of danger by stealing food from his own home If say that had changed his attitude for material life then his introduction to Miss Havisham an aging woman who had been jilted at the alter and Estella who had been brought up by Havisham only to revenge for her own pain had brought vast shock for his world of spirit Aspiring to be a gentleman despite his humble born pip fortunately or unfortunately received a fund of wealth from an unknown source and being sent to London with a lawyer From then on he became a gentleman without question at the price of losing everything The title of this book is Great expectations which make an impression on us that the character would have great expectations just as the title goes But in fact this title has a tone of sarcastic on the other way around This story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end the relations among characters are anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot One of the paragraphs which I appreciate most implicatively as well as beautifully expresses the feeling between pip and Estella We are friends said I rising and bending over her as she rose from the bench And will continue friends apart Said Estella I took his hand in mine and we went out of the ruined place and as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first let the forge so the evening mists were rising now and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me I saw no shadow o
