Miller(19152005)is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century.Millers father had moved to the USA from AustriaHungary, drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream”However,he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.Millers most famous play,Death of a Salesman,is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play,we see a man who has got into trouble with his worth.Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment:if he cant do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and must go.Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end. When it was first staged in 1949,the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury,Connecticut,on the evening of February 10,2005,the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.1Why did Arthur Millers father move to the USA?AHe suffered from severe hunger in his home country.BHe was attracted by the “Great American Dream”CHe hoped to make his son a dramatist.DHis family business failed.2What can we learn about Willy Loman?AHe treats his employer badly.BHe runs the Wagner Company.CHe is a victim of the American system.DHe is regarded as a hero by his colleagues.3After it was first staged,Death of a Salesman _.Aachieved huge successBwon the first Tony AwardCwas warmly welcomed by salesmenDwas severely attacked by dramatists4What is the text mainly about?AArthur Miller and his family.BThe awards Arthur Miller won.CThe hardship Arthur Miller experienced.DArthur Miller and his bestknown play.5The play Death of a Salesman_.Aexposes the cruelty of the American business worldBdiscusses the ways to get promoted in a companyCtalks about the business career of Arthur MillerDfocuses on the skills in doing businessBFor a 400yearold art form, opera had a bad fame:overweight actresses singing the words which were hard to understand in one of those romance languages you were supposed to learn in high school. And with tickets costing as much as $145 a performance, opera goers also had a certain appearance in peoples mind:rich, welldressed and old.But now opera companies around the country are loosening_their_ties_and_kicking_off_their_shoes in an attempt to keep opera alive and take it to a younger and not so wealthy audience.Opera producers have found that to attract this crowd, they need to associate opera with common people. That means no formal suits, oldstyle theatre or bank breaking ticket prices. And because young people dont or wont come to the opera, companies are bringing the opera to them, giving performances in such usual places as parks, libraries and public schools. The Houston Grand Operas choice is the public library, where it performs “mobile operas”,shortened version of childfriendly operas. This summers production is HanselGretel.By performing smaller versions of large productions, producers are able to make people interested while keeping costs at a reasonable level. The San Francisco Opera, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year,is staging Cinderella free of charge, keeping costs down by employing students from its Young Artists Training Program.6What is the passage mainly about?AThe ticket prices of opera are becoming lower and lower.BOpera is popular only to rich people.COpera companies are trying to keep operas alive.DYoung people are not interested in operas.7The underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably means _.Abreaking up the old rulesBchanging the dressesCmaking the audience laughDlowering the prices of the tickets8Why opera companies prefer to perform smaller versions?ABecause they can be performed in public libraries.BBecause short versions are easy to perform.CBecause it is hard to find long versions.DBecause they can make people interested.9The San Francisco Opera employs young students in order to _.Amake young people interested in itBreduce the costsCcelebrate its 75th anniversaryDmake Cinderella more popular10We can conclude that _.Athe tickets for opera are very expensive at presentBopera is performed in a language difficult to understandCopera is not so popular an art form todayDyoung people enjoy performing operas very much七、語(yǔ)法填空閱讀下面材料,在空白處填入適當(dāng)?shù)膬?nèi)容(不多于3個(gè)單詞)或括號(hào)內(nèi)單詞的正確形式。Eliza Doolittle was 1._ unrefined, dirty flower girl with poor phonetics 2._ Professor Higgins was an expert in
