8、s into the water.nMetaphor: After the mole devoured its prey, it was a submarine sinking into the water.nHere the metaphor doesnt work because the earth is not mentioned. The reader cannot readily imagine what the mole was actually doing, and therefore cannot make sense out of the comparison.nMetaph

9、or: Every muscle in my body ached and cried for mercy.nSimile: Every muscle in my body ached and was like a victim crying for mercy.nHere the simile breaks the flow of the sentence. Since the reader can easily image who might be crying for mercy, you dont need to specify victim. Using the shortcut o

10、f the metaphor, you can go straight to cried. nWhen the reader cannot imagine a missing element, you have to mention it, and you will probably need a simile. But when the reader can supply the missing element, there is no need to mention it, and you can take full advantage of the intensity and compr

Henry,pseudonym of William Sydney Porter,was born in North Carolina on September 11,1862. He worked as apprentice, pharmacist, co

28、wboy, clerk, book keeper since he was fifteen years old. Accused of embezzling funds from bank, he fled to Honduras. On hearing his wifes illness, he came back, but was sentenced to a three-year imprisonment. The tough life experience laid a deep foundation of his writing career. After released in 1

29、901, he moved to New York, wholly devoted himself to literature. The ten years ever since is his last ten years and his splendid ten years. Writing at the rate of more than one story per week, he published ten collections of stories and over 600 short stories during his lifetime, all of which are ab

30、out the life of ordinary people in New York City. The Last Leaf”, first published in 1905. nThe setting is Greenwich Village, New York, 1905. Johnsy, Sue and Behrman are three of the impoverished artists. One autumn, Johnsy suffers from Pneumonia that has killed so many people at that time. Johnsy i

31、s in despair that she depends her life on the ivy leaves outside the window. She believes that the moment the last leaf falls she will die. Her friend, Sue doesnt know what to do except worrying and constant nursing. Then on a cold, rainy, windy night, when it is quite apparent that the last leaf is

32、 “dying”, Old Behrman, who regards himself as “special mastiff-in-waiting to protect the two young artists”, defies the cold, wet night to paint a leaf on the outdoor vine to restore the dying Johnsys will to live. The doctor tells Sue that Mr. Berhman died of pneumonia during the night. They found

33、his body in your alley, next to a ladder and a lantern, and a palette of green and yellow paints. Heaven knows what he was doing out there. The last leaf, which raises Johnsys hope of living when she sees it the next morning, is Behrmans masterpiece that eluded him in life. nThe Last Leaf, moving al

34、ong around the corethe last leafthe masterpiece, sings the praise of the sincere friendship and the noble spirit-selfless sacrifice of ordinary people. The story about the three artists is not an occasional incident, but the life of the improvised, unpublished, would-be “great artists”. They are at

35、the lower class of the society and strive for success, strive to accomplish a great masterpiece. They give support to each other, even without hesitation to sacrifice their own life. Their life will not be less splendid than that of the upper class because of poverty. On the contrary, they are great
