2、tlemen,ladiesandchildrenwhohavereadthenovelandenjoyedit,whichisthefactthatthisrestaurantwas,mostlikely,namedaftertheAmericanNativeinRobinsonCrusoe,calledFriday.Thisrestaurantoffersveryexceptionalservice,forinstancewhenthewaitressesareaskedtoorderdishestheykneelratherthanstand,which,unliketheotherres

3、taurantsIhavebeento,makesiteasierforthecustomerstohearthemspeak.Moreover,Fridaysfriendlyservicestothecustomershelpthemtomakebetterchoiceswhenorderingdishes.IrememberedwhenIwenttoFridayslasttime;thewaitresskindlydescribedtheitemsonthemenuwithprecisedetails.ItturnedoutthatthecomboIinitiallywantedwasde

5、oveforhisparents,brothers,sisters,orevenhiswife.“Whenheespiedme,hecamerunningtome,layinghimselfdownagainupontheground,withallthepossiblesignsofanhumble,thankfuldisposition,makingmanyanticgesturestoshowittoletmeknowhowhewouldservemeaslongashelived.”ThiswaswhatFridaydidafterCrusoehadrescuedhimfromthet

6、wosavageschasinghim.ItwaseasyformetoseewhyCrusoehadlovedFriday.Aftersometime,CrusoeandFridayweretorescueFridaysfather.WhenFridayreunitedwithhisfather,thescenewaseasytomoveanyone:“ItwouldhavemovedanyonetotearstohaveseenhowFridaykissedhim,embracedhim,huggedhim,cried,laughed,halloed,jumpedabout,danced,

7、sung;andthensungandjumpedaboutagain,likeadistractedcreature.ItwasagoodwhilebeforeIcouldmakehimspeaktome.”Thisismyfavouritechapterinthewholebook.ItishardtoseewhyFridayisanex-savagewhenhecanhavepersonalitiesmorepraiseworthythanmanycivilizedpeople,viz.Crusoehimself.“Whenhe(Friday)wenttohim(Fridaysfathe

8、r),hewouldsitdownbyhim,openhisbreast,andholdhisfathersheadclosetohisbosom,halfanhourtogether,tonourishit;thenhetookhisarmsandankles,whichwerenumbedandstiffwiththebinding,andrubbedthemwithhishands.”Furthermore,FridaysexpressionofloyaltyinaskingCrusoetokillhimratherthanleavehimismoreheartfeltthananyth

11、lloftheirsonsweredead.Hehadthesamefeelingsforhiswife:whenhewasmarried,hesaiditwas“noteithertomydisadvantageordissatisfaction”,implyingthatitwasalsoneithertohisadvantagenorhissatisfaction.Moreover,afterhiswifedied,Robinsondidnotthinkoflookingafterthethreechildrentheyhad,butwentbacktotheisland,whichhe

12、hadlivedonfortwentyeightyears.ItwasonthistripwhichRobinsonCrusoerevisited“HisIsland”ashecalledit.IfeelthatRobinsonsindifferencetohisfamilyisalmostemotionallycruel.BefoehadclearlyshownthecontrastbetweenCrusoesandFridayspersonalities,aswhenFriday,inhisjoyfulreunionwithhisfather,displayedfarmoreemotiontowardhisfamilymembersthanCrusoe,whereasCrusoenevermentionsmissinghisfamilyordreamsaboutthehappinessofseeingthemagain.IthinkDeforeisverysuccessfulinintroducingFridayaspartofthenovel,itmakesthewholenovelseemmuchmorecompleteandgrippingtothereader,aswellasprovingthatDefoesideologyofra
