Whats your favorite sport? Why do people need to play sports?What do you know about the
8、 Olympic Games? 2.Background Information:Nowadays many people work in offices, spending most of their time indoor. In the enening they usually sit watching TV or reading newspapers. Their daily activities do not provide them with the exercises needed to keep them fit and healthy. Therefore, many of
9、them devoted part of their spare time to doing regular physics exercises and playing some sports. Some people go to the gym for a workout three times in the evening. The exercises they do there can help them stay in shape and feel relaxed. 3. Listening to text 1 and 24. Speaking Tasks: ask the stude
10、nts to get into pairs and explain to them how to carry out Speaking Task A- Reflections on the texts, and then select a pair to present their views in class.Section A Time-Conscious Americans1. Background Information:Cultural differences: Students and teachers need to be aware that the ethnocentric
11、attitudes of writers are precisely the way cultural conflict is encouraged. Why is understanding a culture always the others responsibility? Is it not possible that each culture could be made aware of different conventions? Both sides must work at rising above cultural differences and be willing to
12、compromise and, in both cases, most likely neither side has access to the cultural conventions of the other so blaming is not the answer. Educating is.2. People budget it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for

In the writers eyes, city people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete the

This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting” it beyond a certain appropriate point.Part 2 (Para. 4):Question - Why will new arrival in the States miss many social behaviors during a business call?Answer-This is because America
23、ns generally assess and enquire about their visitors professionally rather than socially. They start talking business very quickly. Time is always ticking in their inner ear. (Para.1)Meaning: No one keeps motionless, everyone moves and advances. stand: v. keep or stay in a particular position or stateFor this sense, stand is followed by adjectives or adjective-
26、like phrases. e.g. The room stands idle. 這房間閑置著。They stood ready to move at short notice. 他們已準備好, 接到通知隨時可搬。 Stand firm - dont let them tell you what to do. 要堅定, 不要讓他們對你指手畫腳。They stand opposed to the new law. 他們反對這項新法律。In the above sentences, stand is used as a linking verb. still: a. not moving, mot
27、ionless, calm, quiete.g. Keep still while I do up your shoe. 站著別動,我給你系鞋帶。The sea was calm and still. 大海風平浪靜。Still waters run deep. (諺)流靜水深,人靜心深。This word can also be used as a verb with a related meaning. The food stilled the babys cries. 嬰兒吃了東西就不哭了。 This attitude results in a nation of people commi

(Para.1) Meaning: As a result of this attitude, Americans tend to devote their time and energy to researching, experimenting and exploring. result in: have as a result; causee.g. Acting before thinking always results in failing. 做事不先考慮總會導致失敗。The acci

(
30、Para.2) Meaning: We are under the control of time only and nothing else (or: we are only dominated by time). slave to sth.: a person who is completely influenced or dominated by sth.e.g. a slave to drink 酒鬼a slave to money 金錢的奴隸nothing but: only e.g. Hes nothing but a criminal. 他只不過是個罪犯。The report c

37、去。 Part 2 (Para. 4): They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. (Para.4) Meaning: They will be sad because they will not have the usual exchanges (with the person who invited you) that go with a welcoming cup o
38、f tea or coffee. These usual exchanges may be a common and regular practice on similar occasions in their own country. convention: n. Meaning 1) general, usu. unspoken, agreement about how people should act or behave in certain situations; customary practicee.g. Convention now allows women to smoke
