AUTHOR: ALEX HALEY Alex Haley (1921-1992) was American biographer (傳記作者), scriptwriter (電影劇本作家) and author who became famous with the publication of the novel
3、Roots (根). It traced Haleys ancestry back to Africa and covered seven American generations, starting from his ancestor, Kunta Kinte(昆塔金特). Roots was adapted to television series and woke up an interest in genealogy ( a family tree 家系, 宗譜) particularly among African-Americans. ALEX HALEYS BOYHOOD HOM
4、E It was built in 1919 in the small town of Henning, Tennessee by Will E. Palmer, the maternal grandfather of Alex Haley. From 1921 to 1929, and during some subsequent summers, Haley lived here with his grandparents. It was on the porch of this house that Haley heard from his grandmother, Cynthia Pa
5、lmer, the family stories that inspired him to write Roots, retelling tales of his African ancestors who were brought to America as slaves. ROOTS This book won Alex the 1976 Pulitzer Prize, and the book was presented in an eight-part television adaptation in 1977. Roots has been translated into over
6、thirty languages, and has inspired millions to search for their own roots. http:/ The book opened up the minds of Americans of all colors and faiths to one of the darkest and most painful parts of Americas past. In 1977 Roots won the National Book Award and a special Pulitzer Prize. The book sold in
7、 one year more than million copies and became the basis of courses in 500 American colleges and universities. Roots, the television mini-series, ran from January 23 to January 30, 1977 and attracted some 130 million viewers the largest audience up to then. More people have seen the series than read
