29AcomparativestudyofonesuccessfulandonelesssuccessfulEnglishlearnersinChina30IntroductionAbriefliteraturereviewResearchquestionsMethodologySubjectsInstrumentsData-collectionData-analysisResultsanddiscussion31IntroductionSincethe70’s,studiesonlearningstrategiesusedbyL2learnershavebeengrowing.Theirgeneralassumptionthestudiesattemptedtotestisthatpoorlearnersusefewervarietiesofeffectivestrategiesandusethemlessfrequently.32Thecontentionofthesestudiesisthatifpoorlearnerscanexpandtheirrepertoireoflearningstrategiesandincreasethefrequencyofusingthem,theirachievementwillbeimproved.However,theempiricalstudieshaven’tyetyieldedconsistentresultsinsupportoftheaboveassumption.33ResearchquestionsHowdoagoodlearnerandapoorlearnercarryoutL2learningactivities(i.e.Listening,speaking,reading,writingandlearningnewwords)?Whatarethemainreasonsthatcanaccountfortheirdifferentlearningbehaviors?34
