Buttherealcostwasevengreater.NotonlydidpatientsstoptakingVioxxbut,doctorssay,manypeoplestoppedtakingtheirothermedicines,too-sometimesputtingtheirhealthatseriousrisk.
Vioxxwasthefirstpebbleinthepharmaceuticalrockslide.Soon,accusationsaboutaspateofotherdrugsweremakingheadlines,includingallCOX-2inhibitorswhich,likeVioxx,relievepain.Thechargesdidn'tstopthere.TheFDAwasaccusedofsimplyrubber-stampingnewdrugs;drugcompanieswereblamedforhidinginformationaboutunsafeproducts;andtheefficacy(功效)ofclinicaltrialsthatdidnotrevealhowlargenumbersofpeoplewouldreactwasquestioned.Butonequestionthatwasrarelyaskedcoulddeterminewhetherornotpharmaceuticalcompaniescontinuetodevelopandproducebreakthroughmedicationsthatcansaveorextendlivesandhelppeoplelivewithoutpain.Thequestion:doAmericansexpectdrugstoberisk-free?And,ifsomeonesuffersabadreaction,willlawyersratherthandoctorsbethefirstpeoplewecall?

Duringthetan-yearperiodbetween1994and2004,theFDAapproved321completelynewdrugs(thisdoesn'tincludeapprovalsforchangestoexistingmedicines),bringingthetotaltomorethan10,000drugproductsonthemarket.Duringthatsameperiod,eightdrugswerewithdrawnforreasonsofsafety,suchasthedietdrugfenfluramine(fen-phen,associatedwithheart-valvedisease)andtheallergydrugSeldane(linkedtoheartarrhythmias).ButtheVioxxrecallcreatedashockwavefortheAmericanconsumerlikenoother.Manypeoplehadcometodependontheir"meals",andtheyexpectedthemtobesafe,too,especiallywhentheycostsomuch.Prescriptiondrugsaccountfor,somesay,thefastestgrowingsegment(aboutone-tenth)ofallhealthexpenditures,withsomespecialtydrugscostinghundredsofdollarsperdose.
