Cheers.Treadwellclaimedtohisparentsthathewassecond-choicefortherole,butthishasnotbeenindependentlyverified.InterestinbearsAfterseveralvisitstoAlaskaintheearly1990's,Treadwellbecameinterestedinbearsand,inthelast5yearsofhislife,documentedmanyofhisexperiencesandinteractionswithbearsviahomevideo.Treadwellattributedhisrecoveryfromdrugusetohisrelationshipwithbears.By,Treadwellbecamenotableenoughtoreceiveextensivemediaattentionbothontelevisionandinenvironmentalcircles.Throughhisvideos,hebecameknownforattemptingtocreatepersonalrelationshipswiththebearsheworkedwith.Asanactivist,heactivelycommunicatedwiththepublic,includingtravelingthroughouttheUnitedStatestoeducateschoolchildrenaboutbears,andappearingontheDiscoveryChannel,LateShowwithDavidLetterman,andDatelineNBCtodiscusshisexperiences.Hewasalsoaco-author,withJewelPalovak,ofthebook

AmongGrizzlies:LivingwithWildBearsinAlaska,wherehedescribedhisadventuresinAlaska.Treadwell,alongwithhisfriendsJewelPalovak,andformerAmericanGladiatorJonathanByrnefoundedGrizzlyPeople,apoliticalorganizationdevotedtoprotectingbearsandpreservingtheirwildernesshome.Despitetheorganization'sname,Treadwelldidnotassociatewithgrizzlybears,atermproperlyappliedonlytobrownbearsthatlivefartherinland.DeathInOctober,Treadwellandhisgirlfriend,AmieHuguenard,visitedKatmaiNationalParkinAlaska.Treadwell,whonevercarriedanymeansofdefenseagainstbearattacks,chosetosethiscampsitenearastreamwherebearscommonlyfeedinthefall.Treadwellwasintheparklaterintheyearthanusual,atatimewhenbearsfighttogainasmuchfataspossiblebeforewinter,andlimitedfoodsuppliescausethemtobemoreaggressivethaninothermonths.Ithasbeennotedthatfoodwasscarcethatfall,andthebearswerethereforemoreaggressivethanusual.OnOctober6,,TreadwellandHuguenard'sbodieswerediscoveredbytheKodiakairtaxipilotwhoarrivedattheircampsitetopickthemupfromtheirtrip.Alargeelderlymalebear(taggedBear141)protectingthecampsitewaskilledbyparkpolicewhiletheyattemptedtogetthebodies.Asecondadolescentbearwaskilledashorttimelaterafteritchargedtheparkpolice.Itwaslatershownthatthefirstanimalhadconsumedpartsofthecouples'remains.ThisbearisnotbelievedtobeoneofthebearsTreadwellusuallyencountered,thoughthispointisdisputed.Avideocamera,withthelenscapinplace,wasrecoveredatthesite.Thevideocamerahadbeenturnedonatsomepointduringthefatalattack,presumablybyHuguenard,butthecamerarecordedonlysixminutesofaudiobeforerunningoutoftape.Treadwell'shead,partialbackbone,andleftarmandhandstillwearinghiswristwatchwererecoveredatthescene.Huguenard'spartialbodywasfoundnearbysomewhatburiedindirt.MethodsandCriticismTreadwell'smethodsweregenerallythoughtunsoundbybearexpertsandpublicalike.Henamedmanyofthebearsheencounteredandoftenmovedcloseenoughtothemthathecouldtouchthemandinteractwiththemonapersonallevel.Manywildlifeexpertsobjectedtohismethods,believingthathisattitudetowardthebearswastoobrave,thatheignoredwell-knowndangersofworkingwithbears,andthathethoughtofthemtoomuchaspeople.Expertsalsobelievethatheendangeredtheanimalsbymakingthemtoocomfortablewithhumans,thusincreasingthelikelihoodofdangerousencountersinthefuture.Hisdeathbybearattackisseenbysomeasanaturalconclusionofhismethodsofinteractingwithbears.HiscriticsalsonotethatwhileTreadwellbelievedthathewasprotectingbears,controlexpertshavestatedthatincidentsofillegalhuntingintheareawerelowanddidnotaffectthepopulationlevel.However,accordingtothe"GrizzlyPeople"organizationhefounded,fivebearswerekilledintheyearafterhisdeath,whilenonehadbeenkilledwhilehewaspresentinKatmai.Thislastpointisdisputed.GrizzlyMan,theFilmIn,directorWernerHerzogreleased
