Introduction

TheO-RANALLIANCE’smissionistore-shapetheRANindustrytowardsmoreintelligent,open,virtualized,andinteroperablenetworks.Toachieveitsmission,itembarksonthreemainstreamsofwork:

AspartoftheTestingandIntegrationstream,OpenTestingandIntegrationCentres(OTICs)andtheO-RANCertificationandBadgingprogramarekeypillarsthatsupporttheecosysteminachievingthemissionofO-RAN.Thiswhitepaperprovidesanoverviewofthesetwokeypillars,whattheyare,howtheyoperate,andtheirkeyobjectives.

OpenTestingandIntegrationCentre(OTIC)

TheO-RANALLIANCEqualifiedOpenTestingandIntegrationCentre(OTIC)providesacollaborative,open,vendor-independent,andimpartialworkingenvironmenttoanypotentialclient/customerthatisinterestedintestingitsproductsandsolutions.

AnyO-RANMemberand/orContributorthatexhibitvendorneutralitycanapplytohostanOTIC,andeachOTICmaybehostedbyoneormorehosts.Thehost(s)coordinatesandisfullyresponsibleforalltheactivitiesinanOTIC.

EachOTICmayfocusondifferentactivitiesandservicessuchas:

O-RANCertificationandBadgingProgram

TheO-RANcertificationandbadgingprogramrepresentsacomprehensivemechanismtoensureconfidenceinO-RANbasedproductsandsolutionsforboththeoperatorandvendorcommunities.TheO-RANcertificationandbadgingprogramaimstominimizerepetitionoffundamentalandcommontestsperformedtoverifyandvalidateO-RANbasedproductsandsolutionsbeforetheirdeploymentinoperatornetworks.Thiswillhelpreducetesteffortsconductedbynetworkoperatorsandpromotevendors’O-RANbasedproductsandsolutions.Additionally,itwillcreateanopportunityforinteroperabilityamongdifferentvendorsandacceptancefromothervendors.

O-RANcertificationandbadgingshouldnotbeusedasasubstituteforoperator-specifictestingofO-RANbasedproductsandsolutionspriortodeploymentinoperatornetworks.AO-RANcertificateandbadgedonotmeanallthenecessarytestshavebeenperformedandpassed,andanO-RANcertified/badgedproductorsolutionshouldnotbeassumedtobeautomaticallydeployableinanoperatornetworkwithoutanyadditionaltesting.Rather,O-RANcertificationandbadgingcanimproveoperatorconfidenceintheirchosenO-RANbasedblueprintandcanreducethecomplexityanddurationofpre-deploymenttesting.

TheO-RANcertificationandbadgingdefinesandunifiesprocesses,procedures,templates,dataformat,etc.whichareprovidedtoensuresharingofthetestresultsandrepeatabilityoftheexecutedtests.TheO-RANcertificationandbadgingdoesnotdefineanyspecificcertificationorbadgingtestbutreferstotestsdefinedinO-RANtestspecificationsproducedbyrelatedO-RANWork/FocusGroups.TheO-RANcertificationandbadgingdescribetheprocessesandassociatedtechnicalproceduresinconformancecertification,IOTbadgingandE2Ebadgingwhicharediscussedfurtherinthefollowing.

ThepurposeofO-RANcertificationistoverifythatavendor’sproductiscomplianttoO-RANspecificationsusingasetofO-RANdefinedconformancetests.TheO-RANcertificateisawardedtoaproductforoneormoreO-RANspecifiedorO-RANprofiledinterfaces(e.g.,O-RUOpenFronthaul,O-DUO1).

ThepurposeofO-RANinteroperability(IOT)badgingistoproveinteroperabilityofapairofproductsconnectedviaanO-RANinterfaceorO-RANprofiled3GPPinterfaceusingasetofO-RANdefinedinteroperabilitytests.TheO-RANIOTbadgeisawardedtobothproductsinthepairandisapplicableforanO-RANspecifiedorO-RANprofiledinterface(e.g.,O-RUandO-DUconnectedviaOpenFronthaul).

ThepurposeofO-RANend-to-end(E2E)badgingistodemonstrateandvalidatethatanend-to-endsystemorsubsystemmeetsminimumrequirementsintermsoffunctionalityandsecurityandothermandatoryend-to-end

functionalitiesusingO-RANdefinedend-to-endtests.Inaddition,O-RANE2Ebadgingcanalsoprovideanindicationofend-to-endperformanceandotheroptionalend-to-endfunctionalities.TheO-RANE2Ebadgeisawardedtoallproductsintheend-to-endsystemorsubsystem.

AnO-RANcertificateorbadgecanbeawardedonlytoproduct(DeviceUnderTestorDUT)representingO-RANnetworkfunction(s)(suchasNear-RTRIC,O-CU-CP,O-CU-UP,O-DU,O-RU,etc.)withO-RANinterface(s)(suchasOpenFronthaul,O1,A1,etc.)asdefinedintheO-RANarchitecture[3],orto3GPPfunction(s)(suchaseNB,gNB-CU,gNB-DU,etc.)withO-RANprofiled3GPPinterfaces(suchasXn,F1,etc.).

Currently,theO-RANcertificates,IOTbadgesandE2Ebadgeshavebeendefinedforthefollowingproducts(andinterfaces),andtheseproductscanbeawardedbyO-RANcertificatesandbadges.

Summary

InthisWhitePaper,weoutlinedthetwokeyinitiativesthatsupportthebroaderO-RANecosystemintheirtestingandintegrationefforts,namelytheOpenTestingandIntegrationCentres(OTICs)andtheO-RANcertificationandbadgingProgram.ThroughthecombinationoftheOTICsandtheO-RANcertificationandbadgingprogram,anyO-RANvendorregardlessoftheirsizecanhaveanopportunitytoshowcaset
