butonehundredyearslater,thenegrostillisnotfree.onehundredyearslater,thelifeofthenegroisstillsadlycrippledbythemanaclesofsegregationandthechainsofdiscrimination.onehundredyearslater,thenegrolivesonalonelyislandofpovertyinthemidstofavastoceanofmaterialprosperity.onehundredyearslater,thenegroisstilllanguishedinthecornersofamericansocietyandfindshimselfane*ileinhisownland.andsowe'vecomeheretodaytodramatizeashamefulcondition.

wehavealsocometothishallowedspottoremindamericaofthefierceurgencyofnow.thisisnotimetoengageinthelu*uryofcoolingoffortotakethetranquilizingdrugofgradualism.nowisthetimetomakerealthepromisesofdemocracy.nowisthetimetorisefromthedarkanddesolatevalleyofsegregationtothesunlitpathofracialjustice.nowisthetimetoliftournationfromthequicksandsofracialinjusticetothesolidrockofbrotherhood.nowisthetimetomakejusticearealityforallofgod'schildren.

itwouldbefatalforthenationtooverlooktheurgencyofthemoment.thisswelteringsummerofthenegro'slegitimatediscontentwillnotpauntilthereisaninvigoratingautumnoffreedomandequality.nineteensi*ty-threeisnotanend,butabeginning.andthosewhohopethatthenegroneededtoblowoffsteamandwillnowbecontentwillhavearudeawakeningifthenationreturnstobusineasusual.andtherewillbeneitherrestnortranquilityinamericauntilthenegroisgrantedhiscitizenshiprights.thewhirlwindsofrevoltwillcontinuetoshakethefoundationsofournationuntilthebrightdayofjusticeemerges.

butthereissomethingthatimustsaytomypeople,whostandonthewarmthresholdwhichleadsintothepalaceofjustice:intheproceofgainingourrightfulplace,wemustnotbeguiltyofwrongfuldeeds.letusnotseektosatisfyourthirstforfreedombydrinkingfromthecupofbitterneandhatred.wemustforeverconductourstruggleonthehighplaneofdignityanddiscipline.wemustnotallowourcreativeprotesttodegenerateintophysicalviolence.againandagain,wemustrisetothemajesticheightsofmeetingphysicalforcewithsoulforce.

themarvelousnewmilitancywhichhasengulfedthenegrocommunitymustnotleadustoadistrustofallwhitepeople,formanyofourwhitebrothers,asevidencedbytheirpresenceheretoday,havecometorealizethattheirdestinyistiedupwithourdestiny.andtheyhavecometorealizethattheirfreedomisine*tricablyboundtoourfreedom.
